THE TRUTH ABOUT COUSINS

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

I made such a mess of the post about second cousins. It was too long and too complicated. At first I thought I'd rewrite the post and break it up into two posts and then do third cousins.

Then I realized that we'd all be better off if I share the comment made by

Jean, who blogs at  DelightfulRepast.com and describes herself as "an amateur genealogist from way back."

She simplified the cousin issue for me, so I can simplify it for you.

Here's what she said:

Sibling 1----------------Sibling 2 = Siblings

Child of Sibling 1-----------Child of Sibling 2 = 1st Cousins

Grandchild of Sibling 1--Grandchild of Sibling 2 = 2nd Cousins

Great Grand of Sibling 1-Great Grand Sibling 2 = 3rd Cousins

Now how about if we say thank you to Jean and leave it at that? We're all cousins of some sort.

Thank you, Jean!

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Thank you Jean.
My complicated family has a lot of half and step siblings. I am not even going to attempt to define their cousinship...
    And yes, please vote.

    1. My family doesn't have many half or step siblings, but I understand that families can be complicated for so many reasons.

  2. I do not bother to qualify cousins. If you are related to me or even married to someone related to me you earn the cousin moniker.

    1. I'd like to be your cousin and eat in your kitchen.

  3. Dear Janie, in the early 1970s, friend Delores would visit my fine arts restoration and framing shop on J street to view archival photos of the Pocket area along the Sacramento River. I knew enough paternal history to know how they got here from the Azores, and how they progressed into local society. She was compiling a contribution to the History Center for the Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society (abbreviated as PHCS, oh dear). She spoke the phrase beside me at my workbench: "Somos todos primos"--we are all cousins. I consider it an axiom limited to 1st,even 2nd cousins, beyond which I liberate all to all humanity. Good thing too!

    1. Yes. We are all cousins. It sounds better in Spanish. Do you still have your shop? It sounds way cool. I don't know a lot about art, but I know what I like.

    2. Janie, Regrettably, I had to leave the shop in the late '70s to meet medical costs of raising a family. I went outdoors to work for the city as a gardener of public places --and joined a union. Gardening is also an art. Retired 11 years ago, but still assist with my wife's horticultural effects.

    3. Gardening is most definitely art but one I have little talent for.

  4. But what about uncles? Or do I mean aunts? Oh, never mind. SG has a program on his website that figures it our for me!

    1. No questions about relatives. Thinking about all those relationships makes my brain hurt.

    1. I think that's fine. I spend every day forgetting.

  6. Nice sib break down.
Thumbs up on the meme AND please do it in person or turn your ballot in at a ballot box vs the mail.

    1. Jean made it so simple. I like that. I mailed my ballot and received confirmation that it was received and counted. I don't think using the mail is a problem. Someone uses scare tactics all the time.

  7. That's as simple as complicated can get.

    1. I don't ever want to make your head explode, Martha. Then I'd feel responsible for cleaning up the mess.
