IN THE MOOD

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

I'm sorry, but I'm not in the mood for MOVIE WEEKEND today. I'm in the mood for . . .

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  3. Hello, dear Janie Junebug! I'm glad you posted this wonderful performance of "In The Mood" by the Glenn Miller band. I wonder how many of today's rap/hip hop obsessed young people have ever even seen a big band of the 30s or 40s. Shucks, I can't even persuade my grandchildren to watch a black and white movie or television program. The first word out of their mouths is "boring" and they never give it a chance. Some kids only tune in when the music they hear has a modern club beat. I am not without sin, and this is the point I'm trying to make. When I was young and my parents tried to turn me on to WWII era orchestra music, I wanted no part of it. I wanted my music - rock 'n' roll, Why couldn't my ears hear what theirs heard? Why didn't I get the same electric jolt from watching and listening to brilliant musicians like these? People of every generation tend to embrace the type of music that was current and popular when they were growing up, the songs and artists that contributed to the soundtrack of their youth. The big band sound was my parents' rock 'n' roll. It made them feel alive as they danced their way through the Great Depression and WWII.

Thanks for the memories, dear Janie. I hope you're in a great mood and wish you a happy Thursday!

    1. I know Favorite Young Man recognizes this music (and loves it) because he played it. He was an excellent trombonist. I wish he still played.

  4. The lung capacity of those guys, wow.
When I read the title and what you wrote, before clicking the video I swore it was going to "I'm in the mood for love, simply because you're near me. Funny, but when you're near me, I'm in the mood for..."

  6. Where have all the big bands gone? To paraphrase Pete Seeger.

    1. After Guy Lombardo died, his band continued to play on New Year's Eve, but that was quite some time ago. I don't know if they still exist as an orchestra. I can't remember the name of the guy who was in the band The Stray Cats, but he started a big band a while back. I saw them on TV a few times, and they were great. I love the sound of the big bands.

  7. Well Janie - you took me down memory lane there. First heard this in the movie, "The Glen Miller Story." Loved that movie. Also had a Grandfather who played big band sing. We'd dance & sing together. Good times. :)

  8. My grandfathers were really hard working and caring guys, but not a lot of "fun".

  9. Both of my grandfathers were hard working farmers, not necessarily "fun" guys. But I loved them bunches.

  11. Awesome, love some old school music. The old stuff always seems to have heart unlike a lot of the junk they churn out now.

  12. I'm in the mood for a nap...but I have things to do. ;)
I watched so many old black and white movies growing up in Minneapolis. There was an afternoon movie program with Mel Jazz and they had old movies on late at night, too, on a different channel. This brought back memories of all the musicals. :)

I am old enough that I was born in the end of the Big Band era and listened to it because four-year-olds don't get much choice. If I had had a choice, it would be the only thing I knew.

But, I never could understand how those tiny buildings that were radio stations could hold so many people. I knew about records, though. I just thought all those bands played all the time in the tiny radio station out in the field beside the highway.

    1. No, the musicians could shrink so they were all small enough to fit inside the radio station.

  14. Such fun music but why is it that it brings to mind a scary movie?! I feel like I saw it in one.

  17. I've heard a lot of versions of "In the Mood." One of my favorites is by Jerry Lee Lewis, performing as "The Hawk." Great tune.

Btw, the Stray Cats veteran who started his own big band was Brian Setzer. He has about as many tattoos as Favorite Young Man.

    1. Ah, yes, Brian Setzer. I wonder if he still has that big band. I need to Google him. I find Jerry Lee Lewis one of the strangest, yet extraordinarily gifted people on the planet. I just can't play the piano like that, but not many people can. I sit down and Bach comes out. He sits down, or stands up, and the whole world comes out of the piano.

    2. I Googled Brian Setzer. I think he'll make an appearance on my blog one of these days.
