TIP TUESDAY: WILL PAST TENSE BE LEFT IN THE PAST?

 Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

I've written before about the lack of past tense in the writing of some folks, especially those of the younger variety. Now I notice it even more often. It distracts me from the point the writer wants to make because I'm deceived by present tense when the event occurred weeks ago.

One such abomination I note is lead as the past tense of lead. What's wrong with led?

The lack of led has led to mislead as the past tense of mislead. I beg of you: Be misled.

I could go on and on, but I know I'm preaching to the choir. The rest of the world will continue to misuse words and pay me no heed. I'll mope and whine and try to recover from such unholiness as I pet Franklin yesterday.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Oh dear god! These things drive me crazy. I was just yesterday thinking of writing a post about LEAD and LED. Lead is everywhere! I’m waiting for the OED to include it.

    1. When it's included I'll run screaming into the night.

  2. Sigh.
I often itch to change (correct) signs. So far I have resisted.

    1. I've considered carrying a large, black permanent marker with me so I can make corrections, especially when I see a sign with a rule on it followed by NO ACCEPTIONS.

  3. This makes me cringe. I refuse to do business with people who can't even take rhe trouble to ensure correct spelling and grammar on their advertising. And as for misplaced apostrophes, grrr!

  4. It's bad enough hearing some of these things, but seeing signs? Dear goddess ...

  5. Who are these people who use LEAD instead of LED? Jesus. That kind of stuff drives me absolutely insane.

Another pet peeve is the whole your vs. you're issue. It's the difference between knowing your shit, and knowing you're shit! :D

    1. It is not--except at some private schools. I taught public high school for about a minute and a half. We were not allowed to spend time on grammar or spelling.

  9. Irregardless is not considered a word, so the world is changing. Auto correct is also a felon with some words.
Now if you can get the world to quit saying they gifted someone I will bow at your feet.

    1. I can't get anyone to do anything, so don't bother bowing.

  11. It is the adverbs that I am noticing. Drive safe instead of drive safely. That's just one example. I correct people in my head all the time. I know I make mistakes with grammar but I was present during the lessons on adverbs, obviously!😊

  12. I have not encountered any incidents of lead and led. Perhaps I read the wrong writing. But, you do have some offensive examples up there.

  13. I think correct grammar has gone out the window. Sometimes I make mistakes. It happens. I have even embraced the phrase, "I'm going to get my hair did," because that's what people say around here and I want to fit in. lol

  16. Aw, Yes, the examples of wrong words used, or perhaps, intentionally to catch our attention more, mebbe? I can be Guilty and I know I massacre a lot of proper Writing, as in the random capitalization I do on purpose that must drive Scholars stark raving Mad? *LOL* My Granddaughter, tho' she has Learning Disabilities and trouble Reading and Writing, gets bothered a lot when people speak using the wrong or inappropriate Words... where she got that from might come from me, I do cringe sometimes how poorly Educated our Young People seem to be becoming especially. Mostly because I Fear we could be dumbing down very intelligent Young People in our Educational System as it stands and that is an atrocity!
