Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,
I've written before about the lack of past tense in the writing of some folks, especially those of the younger variety. Now I notice it even more often. It distracts me from the point the writer wants to make because I'm deceived by present tense when the event occurred weeks ago.
One such abomination I note is lead as the past tense of lead. What's wrong with led?
The lack of led has led to mislead as the past tense of mislead. I beg of you: Be misled.
I could go on and on, but I know I'm preaching to the choir. The rest of the world will continue to misuse words and pay me no heed. I'll mope and whine and try to recover from such unholiness as I pet Franklin yesterday.
Infinities of love,
Janie Junebug
Oh dear god! These things drive me crazy. I was just yesterday thinking of writing a post about LEAD and LED. Lead is everywhere! I’m waiting for the OED to include it.
ReplyDeleteWhen it's included I'll run screaming into the night.
DeleteSigh.
ReplyDeleteI often itch to change (correct) signs. So far I have resisted.
I've considered carrying a large, black permanent marker with me so I can make corrections, especially when I see a sign with a rule on it followed by NO ACCEPTIONS.
DeleteThis makes me cringe. I refuse to do business with people who can't even take rhe trouble to ensure correct spelling and grammar on their advertising. And as for misplaced apostrophes, grrr!
ReplyDeleteI want to edit the world!
DeleteSign me up as your assistant.
DeleteYou are now my official assistant. I am Queen of Grammar. Do you want to be King Consort or Prince?
DeleteIt's bad enough hearing some of these things, but seeing signs? Dear goddess ...
ReplyDeleteI know. It's torture.
DeleteWho are these people who use LEAD instead of LED? Jesus. That kind of stuff drives me absolutely insane.
ReplyDeleteAnother pet peeve is the whole your vs. you're issue. It's the difference between knowing your shit, and knowing you're shit! :D
It drives me insane, too. The errors I see all the time are painful to me.
DeleteThese kind of things set my teeth on edge too, but "whatchoo gonna do?"
ReplyDeleteI rage away here and then ask Alexa to sing a song that will cheer me up.
DeleteGrammar! One wonders if it is taught anymore!
ReplyDeleteIt is not--except at some private schools. I taught public high school for about a minute and a half. We were not allowed to spend time on grammar or spelling.
DeleteThose signs are so funny! Doesn't say much for our educational system, though. ;)
ReplyDeleteI've seen all sorts of grammatical errors in newsletters from schools and the displays in their halls.
DeleteIrregardless is not considered a word, so the world is changing. Auto correct is also a felon with some words.
ReplyDeleteNow if you can get the world to quit saying they gifted someone I will bow at your feet.
I can't get anyone to do anything, so don't bother bowing.
DeleteYou know what is annoying the fact that spell check doesn't recognsie the error
ReplyDeleteSome grammar checkers might pick up on it.
DeleteGood post Janie.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debby!
DeleteIt is the adverbs that I am noticing. Drive safe instead of drive safely. That's just one example. I correct people in my head all the time. I know I make mistakes with grammar but I was present during the lessons on adverbs, obviously!😊
ReplyDeleteEvery time I left the house when I was in high school, my mother said, Drive safe! Grrrrrrr.
DeleteI have not encountered any incidents of lead and led. Perhaps I read the wrong writing. But, you do have some offensive examples up there.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you read the right writing.
DeleteI think correct grammar has gone out the window. Sometimes I make mistakes. It happens. I have even embraced the phrase, "I'm going to get my hair did," because that's what people say around here and I want to fit in. lol
ReplyDeleteI've never wanted to fit in that badly.
DeletePerhaps lead poisoning has led to some cognitive reduction for so many?
ReplyDeleteLet's have them tested.
DeleteThere, they're, their, your gonna be ok. Heh.
ReplyDeleteI felt your comforting pat on my back. Thank you!
DeleteAw, Yes, the examples of wrong words used, or perhaps, intentionally to catch our attention more, mebbe? I can be Guilty and I know I massacre a lot of proper Writing, as in the random capitalization I do on purpose that must drive Scholars stark raving Mad? *LOL* My Granddaughter, tho' she has Learning Disabilities and trouble Reading and Writing, gets bothered a lot when people speak using the wrong or inappropriate Words... where she got that from might come from me, I do cringe sometimes how poorly Educated our Young People seem to be becoming especially. Mostly because I Fear we could be dumbing down very intelligent Young People in our Educational System as it stands and that is an atrocity!
ReplyDeleteYour capital letters don't bother me. It's part of your creativity.
DeleteThey can’t be that stupid? They must have used these words as a joke?. I am hoping....
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to say it's not a joke. It's a trend.
DeleteUgh! Those signs! I especially can't stand meaningless quotation marks, so that seagull sign really gets my goat.
ReplyDeleteOne of my nephews goes nuts over the misuse of quotation marks, while I'm bother more by misplaced apostrophes.
Delete*sigh* It's hard to ignore these!
ReplyDeleteI can't ignore them, although I wish I could.
DeleteThat Speak English sign is just perfect!
ReplyDeleteI can picture the person who wrote that sign.
