DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING? SINGING THE SONG OF ANGRY MEN

 Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

Remember that sequence in Dog Day Afternoon when you thought Al Pacino's character was shouting Attica?

He's really shouting SCIATICA. He gets the crowd all worked up because they've had enough of that certain pain that burns and stabs its way around the right hip and lower back.

Yes, it's sciatica, and that's what's causing my pain. I had it once before, about 15 years ago. It doesn't hurt as much as it did last week, but it isn't gone.

At least I can sit down now and bend over without crying out in pain. I need to do everything in slow motion.

But I'll leave you today with The Far Side because laughing is much better than crying.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. I actually read along and thought, “He wasn’t yelling Attica?” Groan! When I yell from the pain, one word that does NOT cross my lips is Attica. There are lots more K sounds and INGs!

  3. Oh, I totally feel your PAIN, with Sciatica - been there, done that three times in my life and each time took months to heal itself. Oh, and I am totally a FAR SIDE fan; love me some slightly bent humor.

    1. At least it resolved itself eventually and you didn't need surgery, correct?

  4. Sigh on the sciatica front. I hope it settles quickly. Pain outsucks Dyson.
And thank you for the Far Side reminders.

    1. It's been such a long time between bouts that at first it didn't occur to me that it was sciatica.

  5. Oh, sorry to hear about your pain. Hope you can get some relief soon. I had terrible sciatica while I was pregnant with my first born.

  6. I hope your sciatica clears up soon! I had a good laugh at the "first low-rider" cartoon.

    1. A low-rider would be the only thing I could throw a leg over. Putting on socks is almost too much for me.

  11. I love the Far Side!

Berkeley Breathed, Bloom County's creator, has hinted at a Calvin & Hobbes comeback. I don't know if there's any truth to it but that would be amazing.

  12. I'm sorry to hear of the pain you've been having - I hope it's truly on the way out and you'll be feeling more comfortable soon. Thanks for the cartoons; I do love The Far Side. The sub one made me grin.

  13. I have also had more than once. Eventually it passes, but--man!--does it suck. I still have times when my one leg starts to go this weird tingly numb and I have to get off my feet quickly. That's my warning sign--still. If I don't get off my feet it can turn to sharp pain. *hugs*

  17. Girl, I feel for you! I know pain all too well. Especially back pain. OMG, the worst! I've been having back procedures for decades now and most recently (last week) had sacroiliac injections on both sides; 3 weeks prior had RF (radio-frequency) nerve-burning on both sides of my low spine. Since the sacroiliac injections aren't that effective anymore the Dr told me that I can have the RF on those nerves as well so that's on the agenda for next month. Ugh.
Sciatica is bad. And no amount of trying to explain how excruciating it is will compute to those who haven't experienced it. That goes for any pain really but let me just say: I totally get it and I completely empathize with you. I do hope you get to feeling better real soon. Have you seen a pain-management doctor? I have a great one here in Austin that I can set you up with... :)

I have been so woefully out of touch in blog-land. I miss all my blogging friends and I must apologize for being so lame in keep in touch. I'm really bad at it. I just fully disengaged and haven't even dabbled at a blog post since my last one, i think it was at least a year ago. I kinda lost interest in most things after my Mom passed away 2 years ago. It's been a long grieving process but I'm starting to come back around and hope to fully engage in blogging at some point soon.
Just because I've been out of touch doesn't mean I don't care. I have thought about you often these last several months Janie. Forgive me for not reaching out to connect.
Hope all is well in your world (aside from the sciatica) and that your pretty pups are providing great comfort to you in that special way that only dogs do. Big hug to you!

    1. GIRLFRIEND! I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU!!! I've thought about you so many times. I wasn't very engaged with blogs from the time I started my miserable job until the time I left, so you're not the only one who didn't stay in touch. I have not seen a pain-management doctor, but I will if sciatica becomes a long-term problem. I know it was really hard for you when you lost your dad, and then your mom. I'm sure they were lovely people because they produced a golden child.

  19. That is so funny - Char has been struggling with her sciatica for at least 6 mos or longer so I know how bad that pain can be. I had it for a time, when I was driving back and forth from the bay area to Long Beach to visit my son. Those long drives on the 5 and I'd get that shooting pain. Once I was driving back to the bay area, in major pain so I went in to a 7-11 and bought a 10lb bag of ice and sat on it all the way home. When I got out, it had leaked all over - I was soaking wet but my pain at least was gone for a while so I could get home.

  20. I'm sorry to hear about your sciatica. My father suffers from this. I didn't realize how awful the pain was until this past December. The raviolis were overboiling and he jumped up to save them. He did it took quick and fell down on the ground in pain. I hope that you're back to normal soon and that it never comes back again.

  23. Hi Janie - backpain and legpain are such nuisances ... so I hope it eases. I used to get it - but it turned out to be a hip birth defect - I didn't know about for many decades ... sorted now - the hip is replaced and healthy! I didn't know that clip either, or the cartoons - cheers Hilary
