Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,
I'm looking for a job. I can use the income and, even more important, the health insurance. My COBRA benefits will end soon.
It used to be that work-from-home schemes were exactly that: schemes, rip offs, whatever you want to call them. Now quite a few legitimate jobs are work from home. It would be nice to toil right here in the Little House On The Swamp. When I need a break, Penelope can take over and answer calls with a French accent.
I started applying Sunday night and posted my résumé on Indeed, which has brought a few inquiries my way. With the labor shortage, I should be able to find something quickly. Or is the labor shortage limited to certain restaurants, every fast-food drive-thru, and all the garbage hauling companies in the world? Those are the places I hear about all the time. I don't think I'll be joining the staff at Mickey D's anytime soon, and garbage pick up? I'd probably throw myself face down in the street and beg the driver to run over me so I could escape the stench and the uniform.
So what's the right job for me? What do you think I should be hired to do?
Go ahead. Be creative.
Infinities of love,
Janie Junebug
We have never been so understaffed at the PO, but I don't think the post office is for you. Honestly everyone up here is short staffed. Even our doggie daycare is desperate for people. Maybe something at a vet clinic or doggie daycare? All the tail wagging and kisses you can ask for.
ReplyDeleteI'll take a look at these areas. I am more than fond of animals, as long as they don't bite me.
DeleteGood luck! I hope you find something that's a perfect fit for you and pays well, with good benefits!
ReplyDeleteEverything I've looked at so far appears to have good benefits that begin on the first day.
DeleteTo get the Duh out of Flori-duh.
ReplyDeleteStart with the governor and work on down.
If only I could stop Ron DeSantis.
DeleteGood luck.
ReplyDeleteI hope you CAN find a job where your all round awesomeness is recognised - and compensated.
Perhaps I should rewrite my resume and describe myself as having all round awesomeness.
DeleteHave you considered teaching? You have wonderful language skills. Teachers don't make a lot of money but they get benefits including health insurance.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the necessary certifications for teaching. Not long after I moved here, I sought a teaching job with the intent of obtaining everything necessary. I gave up the idea when students threw things at me, cursed in the classroom, and threatened to beat me up. The administration did not support the teachers.
DeleteEditor-in-Chief, Better Homes and Gardens
ReplyDeleteI like that idea. I saw a Better Homes and Gardens yesterday and was shocked by how small and slender it is now. That should make the job easier.
DeleteWell there's always the world's oldest profession. I hear it pays well and the demand is constant! Don't think it comes with health insurance though! Or, you can move to Canada and you won't need health insurance.
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to move to Canada but I don't know if Canada would be happy to have me. World's Oldest Profession is probably not an option for me, and that's fine.
DeleteMy usual snarky self would come up with something, but it is morning and my system is still caffeine deprived. I should have read this after the third cup!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should start a caffeine rehab clinic.
DeleteI have no clue what is available for work from home jobs--other than computer jobs, like my son's. I wish you the best of luck and hope you find something quickly. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure my skills don't compare to Dagan's in any way.
DeleteI hope you find a great work-from-home job. If you find any worthwhile, let me know. ;)
ReplyDeleteGood luck job hunting!
Thank you, Chrys. I'll pass on anything that pays at least one million/year.
DeleteGood luck with the job search, Janie! Anything to do with writing, editing or research would be right up your alley, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI suppose I could write essays for college students, but my morality prohibits that kind of work.
DeleteI'm guessing writing and editing should be your path, but beyond that, I'll leave your future career prospects up to you. :)
ReplyDeleteWeirdly, I think I might like to be a garbage collector, only because I could get first dibs on whatever people throw out! Can you imagine all the crazy stuff they must see?!
I'm afraid a lot of that crazy stuff would be nasty.
DeleteI am glad our health insurance isn't tied to a job, not that we have any can't afford it andd just go through the public system most of the time
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the U.S. will ever provide universal healthcare.
DeleteI'm waiting to read what everyone says, too. I've been out of the job market since 1990.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid most of the suggestions here aren't very exciting.
DeleteEnglish tutoring, online or in-person? No benefits, though.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of working at a vet clinic. The ladies at my vet's front desk are wonderful. I don't think they have to have any formal training. They work on reception and phones, making appointments, selling medications and special dietary foods, taking payments, etc. - all pretty general work.
I'm sorry I'm not more help. My son has been out of work for awhile due to downsizing and is having trouble getting back into the work force too. His natural anxiety is not helping and neither is the stress over Covid.
My anxiety is problematic. I want to avoid jobs that require driving on the interstate. The traffic bothers me.
DeleteYou have so many talents; any employer would be lucky to have you! If you can't get a work from home job, Costco and Starbucks may offer health care benefits to part timers.
ReplyDeleteI would be the world's worst barista. I don't drink coffee and don't understand all the caramel macchiato stuff and the other special additions.
