NASTAY BATTLE OF THE BANDS: PRINCE V. FOO FIGHTERS

Warning: Do not play this song if children can hear it. If you might be offended by the sexually explicit nature of the lyrics, then please don't listen to this BOTB. It won't hurt my feelings if you skip it.

I also should have said that if even one person is offended by the song in this post, I'll take it down and use music that's more traditional. I'll start reading comments in just a few minutes (8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15).

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

It's time for the February 15, 2016, Battle of the Bands.

Mr. Stephen T. McCarthy provides us with this information about the bloghop:

The whole thing is really quite simple: You select two different versions of the same song (versions  you feel might give each other some competition in the voting) and you post them on the 1st and the 15th of each month. On the 7th and 21st of each month, you add your own personal vote to the mix, total up all the votes and announce the winner on your blog.

Beyond that, just try to have fun with it and let your readers/voters have fun with it.

We begin with Prince, the man who wrote, arranged, produced, and first sang the song, Darling Nikki:

Now we have a popular cover of Darling Nikki performed by the Foo Fighters and Cee-Lo Green. I can't find a video that I can embed, so I direct you to their performance via this link:

Cee-Lo and Dave Grohl

Please vote for your preferred version of Darling Nikki in your comment, and tell us why you made the choice. Or if you like, tell us why you think the song is repugnant. I'll announce the winner on February 21st.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Have to vote for the Foo Fighters here, as Dave Grohl is basically from my hometown. And also because the combo of Cee Lo and the Foo Fighters is so damn cool.

    1. Dave is from Washington state, right? Did he grow up in Aberdeen with Kurt Cobain? I lived near Seattle for three years during the mid eighties. I loved it there.

    2. I read about Dave and learned he grew up in Virginia and Ohio, so now I wonder about your hometown.

  2. Sexually explicit? Now you're speaking my language!

    1. Would you like to vote, Mr. Clinton, or are you getting bizzy with the intern in the blue dress?

  3. I'm a man-child... should I play these songs, or should I set them to play, step out of the room, and then return to vote?

With that said, I've never been a big Prince fan. The quality of that Foo Fighters/Cee-Lo performance isn't great, but I would imagine if you were there live it would sound pretty good. I'll give them my vote.

    1. It took me quite a while to find the two videos. Prince has a boatload of lawyers who keep his stuff off YouTube, or wherever. Apparently the Foo Fighters don't like to have a lot of their stuff online, or maybe it's just this song because they think Prince was angry with them for covering it. I don't get it. You have to get permission from the owner to record a song, right? You do have the answers to all my questions, don't you?

  4. Prince. What can I say about Prince? I like several of his songs very much. As a teenager I found him somewhat fascinating. I didn't understand all of his lyrics, but I knew there was some illicit stuff in there! One of my friends says he's "nasty in a good way." Or as you say Nastay.

Darling Nikki is just not one of my favorite songs by him. Yeah, I understand what all that illicit stuff means NOW, so I don't get quite the thrill I used to when hearing it. Of course, even in "the day" this wasn't a favorite for me. That said, it's way better than the cover by Foo Fighters and CeeLo. I think they're going to have an uphill battle beating Prince with his own song.

    1. Tipper Gore discovered her young teenage daughter listening to Darling Nikki. It led to the requirement that CDs and albums and whatever have a warning on them about adult material. I like the song.

  5. I give it to Prince because he has his own unique style whereas the Foo Fighters go all heavy metal and I can't even understand what they are saying. Prince gets my vote

    1. I understand the Foo Fighters pretty well except when they get to the word "grind." Then the instruments overcome the words. Besides, the only video I could embed of the Foo Fighters was the amateur recording you saw and heard.

  6. I'm going to give this one to Prince. He's an awesome performer. I saw him in concert years ago. Amazingly, I saw him and Michael Jackson in concert in the same week!
Hope your headache is gone by now...

    1. You saw Prince and Michael Jackson during the same week? Just kill me now because I'm going to die from envy anyway. If you didn't make such cool jewelry for me, I'd hate you.

    2. Hate is too strong. I might not like you as much as I do now. I wanna hear all about Prince and Michael Jackson. Did you partay with either of them after the show?

  7. Janie, I never cared too much for Prince. I don't remember the song at all. It only took a few seconds to listen to both vids to know which version I preferred and Foo Fighters & CeeLo get my vote. Interesting battle. Thanks for stopping by earlier to vote. Have a good week!

    1. I didn't like Prince when he first became famous. He's grown on me over the years, like a mold or a fungus. I'd never heard Darling Nikki until my son suggested I use it for BOTB.

  8. Not a particular fan of Prince, but I do like many of his songs. As you might expect, not really a fan of this song but I did listen to both. Please give Prince my vote. Thanks. :)

    1. You're welcome. Prince told me to thank you. He would do it himself, but he's putting on fresh make-up.

  9. Prince, of course! I had that album when I was a kid. I knew it was dirty, but I didn't really understand the lyrics...I was probably 13 or 14? I was innocent minded at that age!

    1. That's funny because it's the album that led Tipper Gore to charge into the music world, and now we have warning labels on albums. When I was in sixth grade, I learned from Weekly Reader that I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends was about drugs. The "friends" were nasty, evil drugs. It never would have occurred to me if some idiot hadn't put it in Weekly Reader. We were innocent kids. We could enjoy the music and not worry about the meaning.

  10. Prince gets my vote but I like the Foo Fighters approach on the song

  11. First, I have to say major KUDOS for finding a video of Prince that isn't only 45 seconds long.

Second, OMG DAVE EFFING GROHL!!!!!!!! I don't know why, but he makes me weak in the knees. I think it's because he is not only one of the nicest guys in the music biz, but he is multi-talented. Who else breaks his damn leg and continues his show?

My only regret with this pick is that Cee-Lo Green actually showed up during the song to finish it. He should have stayed off stage and let Dave and the Fighters of Foo finish the song.

Okay, so I'm a wee bit biased, but my vote goes to My future husband, Mr Grohl.

    1. I had to search for a long time to get both videos. I'm a little disappointed that Cee-Lo Green showed up, too, but when you get to that point in the video, you can stop it. When you become Mrs. Grohl, may I perhaps attend the wedding? He makes me a little weak in the knees, too. Ah, Lawdy, that bare chest is nice, and he has beautiful hair. He's touchable. He's a real man. Prince is beautiful, but he's so tiny and fragile that touching him might knock him over. I don't think it's possible to run one's fingers through his hair either, and it's important not to spoil his make-up. He wears much more than I do.

  12. So....not a huge fan of the lyrics, BUT I love this song. It takes me right back to 1985 when I heard it on the radio all the time. I love Dave Grohl, and he does a good job, but Prince is the winner here. What a talent.

  13. Foo Fighters with Cee-Lo are okay but I'll vote for the original Nasty-man, Prince.

  14. Well, there's no way I can cast a vote in favor of Cee-Lo (not a good person, supports Bill Cosby and date rape). So, no brainer here, all my votes to Prince.

    1. How many votes do you want this time? It's $20/vote.

  15. What could be less 'sexy' than Dave Grohl and CeLo Green. . . NOT MUCH, IMO. Jeez, between Grohl screeching and CeLo grinding, I'm not sure I could be more turned off.

That said Prince...YIKES! That's all I'ma gonna say about that dude. But, in the lesser of two weevils type of vote. . . Give the royalty mine.

    1. I think Grohl is sexy, but don't care for Green. Next BOTB I'll use something more conventional.

  16. Foo Fighters, although I don't like Cee Lo Green.
