HOT HOT HOT

 Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

We're under a heat advisory. I worked around the house Saturday morning (cleaned out a kitchen cabinet and the drawer under the range, dusted, organized my table linens) and gradually disrobed because of the heat. By the time Sweet Cheeks arrived, I was in nothing but my pink panties and a sports bra with no seductive gleam in my eye.

We sat down to drink margaritas and chat.

I read something about that nerve in your back, Sweet Cheeks said. Siratica. I don't know if that's how you say it.

Sciatica, I told him.

Yeah, siratica, he said.

I laughed and laughed.

Then we talked about what we'd read in the news, which we always do, which led to us bitching and complaining about people who won't get vaccinated, thereby ruining things for the rest of us.

We are old and tired and with margaritas in us we closed our eyes and took a cat nap. When we awoke, I fixed teriyaki chicken and rice for supper, followed by warm blueberry crumble with ice cream.

This crumble is better than any cobbler they have in a restaurant, he said, further endearing himself to me.

He helped me with a couple of things that required my presence on the step ladder. It was his job to hand stuff to me, including the silver chafing dish that I put on a shelf in my closet.

I told him the chafing dish had been used a total of once.

We were having a Christmas party, I explained. Ten minutes before the guests were due to arrive, X put the dish on the dining room table, put in the alcohol, and lit it. He had spilled some of the alcohol and when it caught fire, it burned the Christmas tablecloth I spent months embroidering and scorched the table. We ran around opening windows to clear the smoke and covered the burned table with a different cloth. The guests had no clue that anything strange occurred.

Sweet Cheeks laughed and laughed.

We sat down again to chat some more. I showed him how I had set up Alexa so she can turn on some lights.

If I say 'let there be light,' she turns on all the lights, I said.

That's nice, he said.

Thanks, Alexa said.

We laughed and laughed. I sent him home with leftovers that I put in plastic containers. He is the man I can trust with my Tupperware.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

    1. Yes. He's my one and only Sweet Cheeks. After we cat napped in our chairs, we might have moved to the bed for a bit before I cooked supper. Please send me your weather.

  4. It sounds like you had a nice evening despite the heat. We had a heat advisory all last week but hopefully it will be a tiny bit cooler this week. Your blueberry crumble sure sounds good and I imagine the ice cream with it made a perfect dessert. What a mess with the fire right before your Christmas party! Sorry you lost your beautiful tablecloth you had worked so hard on, how frustrating.

I hope you get a little cooler weather soon! Take care Janie!

    1. We had a lovely evening. The house is cool and comfortable when I'm not cleaning. The loss of the tablecloth occurred long ago and I have always thought it was funny.

  5. It’s not easy to find someone you can trust with your Tupperware... or to care about your siratica.

    1. He was very sympathetic about the siractica pain. I've known him since 2014 so I have trusted him with Tupperware for a long time.

  6. This is platonic with a capital P. If you can trust the man with your Tupperware, that says it all!

  8. Tupperware trust is everything.

Sweet Cheeks reminds me of Carlos when he pronounces a word and then asks me if it's correct and I say 'No' and then pronounce it for him.
    He says, 'Yeah, whatever.'

    1. X didn't even shout FIRE! I heard him say, Oh, no! Oh, no! and went to see what was wrong. Fortunately, I've always thought it was hilarious and wasn't upset about the tablecloth or the scorched table, which we continued to use for many years and then gave to our son, who used it many more.

  11. I hate the horrible heat but we have been blessed with a somewhat cooler weather. We deal with the rollercoaster ride in weather. Hot then goes cold then heat with humidity, back down again blah blah....That's nice to have a someone to spend time with but then he goes away to his own abode. Nice. Even though it was eons ago, sorry about your tablecloth. My mom told me that we she lit all 4 candles on our Advent wreath, it went up in flames. My dad threw it into the snow.

    1. So I'm not the only one with a Christmas-themed fire. Our temps have been lower this week but the humidity is awful.

  16. Tupperware trust is like, marriage material. Just sayin'

I can't do Alexa. I get it, it's convenient, but it creeps me out having "someone" listening all the time.

    1. There will be no marriages. Alexa doesn't listen all the time. She chimed in on that one part of the conversation because we said her name. She has to be awakened with her name before she listens. Her microphone can also be turned off.

  17. Sounds like you had a great evening! I don't know what to say about Alexa. I'm with the camp who doesn't like technology listening in on everything I'm doing. But I know it's a convenience.

    1. She only listens when she hears her name and even then, if what comes after the name doesn't make sense to her, she turns herself off again.

  18. Sweet Cheeks, Tupperware trust, blueberry crumble- heat or no heat, what a fantastic short tale. This actually sounds like my wife and I in some ways. She has a way with some words now and then, I'll correct her, and, like Bob says above, she'll just say "whatever." Ain't love grand?

  21. So funny, and Sweet Cheeks sounds like a good-hearted human being. Alexa and I have a great relationship ~ LOL. I wish she could turn my lights on. So far she hasn't turned me in for what I've been screaming at the tv.

    1. Sweet Cheeks is very good hearted. He's the most generous person I've ever known and never balks at giving to someone in need. If you want Alexa to turn on the lights, get some smart light bulbs. I liked the SEGNLED brand. You follow the instructions so Alexa recognizes the device and give each light a name. I find it comes in very handy.
