I finished my taxes today. I have a headache.
How is having the kids at home working out for those of you who have children, or grandchildren whose parents work and the kids can't go to preschool or daycare?
I love this video of an Israeli mom ranting about home schooling. She's more than a little frustrated, as I would probably be if I went 30 years back in time when the oxymorons were youngsters.

DeleteYes, they aren't just home the parents have to home school! Leah is lucky Ian is only in preschool--LOL! They have "school" every afternoon while his little brother sleeps but it's workbooks on the alphabet and numbers and practice cutting with scissors and copying words. Whew!

DeleteI know it is hard and tiring. My granddaughter is an only child and an extreme extrovert. She is having a difficult time being "alone" with her mom and dad. I am doing what I can for her online school via FaceTime just to give her parents a break.

DeleteI'm so thankful I do not have school-age children. I would be the day-drinking teacher who put my own child in permanent suspension, I'm sure. That would be with one child. I cannot imagine what those with multiple children are going through. Yes I can. Hell. That's what. There aren't enough hours in the day to homeschool even two children with material you're totally unfamiliar with. Plus cook and do laundry. And CLEAN. And order food. And and and... but we all have to do the best we can to get through this crisis. Believe me, kids are learning a whole lot about real life right now that they would never ever learn in a formal school classroom. And that's probably a really good thing. Cheers! And stay safe :)

DeleteThat woman is absolutely right! I don't know how parents are supposed to direct their children's learning, and in many cases, are expected to work their usual hours on their own job as well. I think we all need to lower our expectations a bit in every way. And have a whole lot of compassion for others AND ourselves.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I wouldn't want to be trying to home school right now, or at all! Thankfully my 'kid' is all grown up. And if I did have to homeschool, I'd might drink on the job, too!

DeleteI love my kids to no end, but I ABSOLUTELY HATE THEM BEING HOME WITH ME WHILE I'M WORKING!!! They don't understand the law of (1) lunch break and (2) 15 minute breaks. They need a new meal every hour! They scream into my conference calls and they need constant entertainment. I can't blame them because they probably hate it more than me, but, ahhhh!!!!!

Carol also had a teacher who drank at school. He kept a bottle in his desk drawer.
DeleteThat Israeli mom is hilarious. I think it'd have been less funny in English. I did pick up on "b'vakasha" - with means "please." But I'm quite certain it wasn't said politely. English and Hebrew don't translate very directly.

DeleteMy adults children (an oxymoron if ever there was) came home from the far ends of the earth to quarantine. It's a double edge sword, leaving meals on trays at the door and worrying about DH and I being "at risk," while wanting the newly unemployed kiddos near us. Like everything, it shall pass.

DeleteWith the "kids" managing their own college online classes, I am a bit baffled by my role being basically nothing as far as that s concerned (and they certainly do not want my input)

DeleteI admire those parents. I deal with crazy 3 cats on daily basis and even I'm "drinking on the job" occasionally. I can't even imagine dealing with kids like that.

DeleteI'm so pleased I'm at the 'empty nester' stage in my life :) That being said, it's a real struggle for parents with their kids at home. Some of them are still working, so juggling that with home life is tough.

DeleteI feel for this mother. It's an impossible situation, and I'm glad that I don't have to deal with it. But I feel for the teachers too. They are also in an impossible situation. We all need to chill a little and give ourselves some slack. We can't expect to function normally in a crazy world, where everything is upside down and we have to worry about staying healthy in a pandemic.

DeleteMy favorite homeschooling meme so far was the one that said, Done with the lessons at home. My kids are dropping out and going to trade school. So far, both are training to be bartenders.
ReplyDeleteAll of my boys are home. I don't have to teach them, but feeding them has been a lot of work. Two were sent home from college and two came home to work remotely.
