CAP IT FOR FRESHNESS

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

I'm always looking for ways to cut back on the use of plastic. Plast-icky dependence is a big problem for our beautiful Earth.

Carol taught me something new a few days ago (actually, she teaches me something new pretty much everyday).

She bought some pulled pork. We used part of it and it was delicious. We had quite a bit left over, so Carol said we should cover it. I went to get the plastic wrap from the cabinet.

Cling Wrap pretty much clings to itself in my clumsy hands, but before I could get out the box, Carol showed me a better, re-usable solution.

A shower cap!

No problem with clinging to itself. The elastic edges stay on perfectly.  And we can wash it out and re-use it when we're done with the pulled pork.

Brava, Carol!

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Great idea. I think I have seen sets of similar items sold for leftovers. :)

    1. Carol buys the cheap shower caps at Walgreen's. I think she even uses them in the shower occasionally.

  2. What a wonderful idea. I will buy a shower cap (or two) next shopping.

    1. Sometimes I try other people's tips and I can't get them to work, but this one is great.

  3. That is a wonderful idea! I would have never thought to use a shower cap. I do use a lot of foil, which you can wipe and reuse.

  4. They actually sell these kinds of food covers at the dollar store. Each box has a variety of sizes. :-)

    1. I wonder if Carol has seen them. She's a dollar store aficianado.

  5. Excellent idea! As Clamco mentioned, you can also buy elasticized bowl covers in different sizes.

    1. Are you experiencing a little cabin fever? I'm antsy and couldn't sleep last night.

    1. The big one for me is that I avoid plastic bottles.

    2. Oh to see a hot guy ... or anyone ... on the beach right now.

  9. How funny, I too have a friend named Carol who teaches me everything I want to know about cleaning, cooking, and so on. I call her my Martha Stewart. She showed me that there are some green colored, very faintly green, plastic storage bags that can easily be cleaned and reused. I need to find out more about that.

  10. We can recycle clean cling wrap here, but this is another way to avoid it altogether. Every idea helps! Also, if you have leftovers small enough to put in a cereal bowl, you can use a small plate to cover it. Give that Carol a high five for us, will you?

  11. An excellent idea! Every now and then I buy a bottle of water or a soft drink in a plastic bottle, and then I use that bottle over and over. I have one in my gym bag that I've been using for months. Sadly, I can't go to the gym, and I'll be a little more cautious about filling stuff at the water fountain.

    1. I warn everyone not to use drinking fountains. When a child to whom I gave birth took a microbiology class, the class members tested all sorts of things in the classroom building for bacteria. The drinking fountain had more bacteria than the toilets.

    2. Eeek! That's an eye-opener, Janie!

    3. Oh, my goodness, when I worked at the nursing home, a lot of the male patients used the drinking fountain as a place to spit. It was disgusting.

    1. I told her last night that a number of comments said that you can get those "shower cap" covers in various sizes at the dollar store. She said, I know because that's where I got them.
I was absolutely positive they were hairnets she bought in one size at Walgreen's.
