QUESTIONS ON BEHALF OF A FRIEND

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

I know someone who wants to start a business training people. He will teach them sit and stay, among other commands.

No. He wants to help people reach their fitness goals. He has questions about setting up a Web site for his business. I said I would ask all of you because someone will have brilliant answers.

I suggested that he use Blogger or WordPress for his site because they are free. He doesn't like the templates. Where should he set up his Web site?

He wants to make a video with him speaking for about a minute at the beginning and then it will cut to someone exercising. How can he do that without spending an arm, a leg, and a kidney?

Do you have any other advice for him, you entrepreneurial types?

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

P.S. I'm not the woman in the photo. I'm more the sit/stay type.

I admire those qualities in a woman.

  3. Tell him to look at squarespace.com
You can start out with the basic plan which is $10 a month (only $8 if you pay year at a time).
It's a fairly easy interface with lots of how-to videos.
As far as the video, you can do good clear videos with an iPhone and edit it in YouTube. You can edit the videos there and add light royalty-free music if you like.
This should at least give him something to think about.

  4. Janie, I have no idea, but hope other folks have interesting ideas.

  5. Obviously, as one who had to change blogs because of my lack of business acumen, I am hardly one to dish out online advice for entrepreneurs. However (the universal call of people who are going to give out baseless advice anyway), I have heard things about Squarespace. They advertise on just about every podcast in existence so he can get a discount using some podcast promo code. Good luck to him.

  6. Janie, there are so many variations on setups for both blogger and wordpress that he really should be able to find something. Maybe Google or Bing have another possibility for setting up a site, or how about one of the "Dummies" books? Sorry, not the techiest person in the world.

  7. You don't have to use the templates on Blogger or Wordpress - you can adjust them as you like. Heck, I have been re-doing my blog monthly (apparently, I don't have enough to do). You can also have someone design a look for your blog. It makes it decidedly less bloggy in appearance. It's amazing what you can force a blog to do.

Purchase a domain name and point it at the blog. Like NOW. I think mine was under $20 for multiple years. When you're thinking about start up - why pay for more stuff before you know if it is viable?

If you're deadset on a webpage instead of a blog format, Webstarts has a free version and GoDaddy's web design dashboard isn't bad.

  8. A blogpal of mine displays videos every day. Have a look. This might suit your friend.

  9. Webs.com is a good place. I've used that for my website. It's free unless you want to add a domain name and security measures. I think it costs me about $60 a year (or maybe it's two - I forget).

  10. Sorry, I'm not a tekkie and don't have any advice to offer, but I wish him the best.

  11. I have no suggestions to offer. I'm not that skilled.

Blessings and Bear hugs, Janie, to you and him!

  13. I don't know anything about the techy stuff, but he'll have to get a good camera and shoot the footage himself to save on money. There are a ton of YouTube videos out there about how to cut, edit, and film videos. (I would suggest looking for somebody who has a lot of followers, because they're probably doing something right.) Beyond that, I have no idea. I can barely even use Blogger.

  14. I used Wix for my writing site. It offered pretty templates and more features than WordPress had... But the free version has the Wix banner at the bottom. You have to pay for premium to lose that...

  15. Because I do my own stuff (art/video editing etc) I don't have any suggestions where your friend could go. It all costs so much when you have a strong vision for what you want but can't do it yourself.

  16. Hi Janie .. I'm glad some suggestions have come out of your questions ... and looking around the blogging fraternity - there are some great bloggers who provide advice ...

    Cheers Hilary
