TIP TUESDAY ON WEDNESDAY EVENING: TOO AND COMMAS

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

Put a comma before too at the end of a sentence or in the middle of a sentence if too means also.

I want to see Green Day, too.

I, too, would like to see Elton John.

No comma for too in You are just too full of crap.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

When I have new writing on my blog I usually post a link to it on Facebook. Facebook or something won't let me post the link now. I wonder if it has something to do with the struggle I went through last night to get rid of Messenger, which should probably have a nastier name. I somehow let Messenger take over and then I couldn't text. I got rid of Messenger, but now I can't post my link on Facebook. Weird.

What have I done now to make the Facebook gods angry with me?

  1. I haven't yet seen anyone use a comma after too in an example like your third one. Yet.

It always bothers me when someone writes something like "There once was a girl named, Janie." Why the comma before the name?

Btw, there's a typo in your salutation: "Gentle Readers . . . and Mawell," I thought you'd like to know. I would if I'd done it.

  2. Smiling at the many exceptions to the i before e rule.
And thank you for the comma and too tip.

    1. I thought the i before e exceptions were cute.

  3. Ha! The main reason I use Facebook is to use messenger. It seems that your attempted separation from it is causing Facebook serious grief.
I, too, hope this grief resolves to dissolve.
P.S. I think the comma comes, also, before also.

    1. I think it depends on where also is in the sentence.

  4. I do have trouble remembering ie or ei in many words. Thank goodness for spellcheck. I do try to remember to use commas before too but may forget with also sometimes. What can I say...flawed human being.

Not a member of Facebook anymore. Left this last January. Only a blogger who has to deal with the Google Gods. ;)

    1. I stay on Facebook to post links to my blog, which I managed to do eventually, and to see photos of relatives. The most important photos are my nieces and nephews and their children.

  5. Argh! Some time ago, Facebook began to block my blog. After months of no response (except automated ones from Facebook) to my requests for help, I renamed my blog! It still won't post from my old blog address. Response were it went against Facebook policy (it did not), there was a technical error they were working on (they were not), someone would get back to me (they did not). The only reason I'm still on Facebook is simply to share my blog posts with my friends and their friends (who can't be bothered to sign up to get notified on my blog). Like I said, argh! Anyway, I love the TOO instructions. I, too, have noticed how few people use commas. It's just too annoying. And I had never seen that "i before e" explanation. Priceless.

    1. Facebook is full of itself. I did manage to put my blog link on Facebook after a struggle. I don't know how your blog could possibly be against Facebook policy. Excuses, excuses.

  6. I didn't know I was supposed to use a comma with too. Now I have to go back through 10 years of posts to correct my mistakes!! AHHHHH!!!!

    1. No, no, no. The Queen of Grammar says you don't have to do that. Keep painting rocks.

  7. Your example ...You are just too full of crap...made me smile. There are so many I would like to say that to, let alone write it! I know I make mistakes with commas, quotation marks, grammar, etc...but I am so eager to get my point across, I hope you can forgive me.😐

    1. You don't need my forgiveness. I think of blogging as creative writing. Sometimes I intentionally misspell words or misuse punctuation to make a point. I would like to tell some people that they are full of something.

  8. Making note of the comma help. I have been called a comma whore by an editor. I suppose my, when-in-doubt, add-a-comma thinking is not good.

No idea why Facebook won't let you post links. Yesterday, I did a takeover party and Facebook wouldn't let anyone post anything. Then the problem just went away as magically as it started.

    1. I ended up figuring out a different way to post my link on Facebook. It takes a little more time, but only a few minutes. Facebook gets pissy.

  9. I ,too, used to observe the comma rule scupulously because I was raised correctly, but nowadays in our modern world, I omit it when using "too" at the end of a sentence. Makes me feel like a rebel!

  10. When writing I, too, either omit or add extra commas. There was a time when I actually proofed what I wrote.

  11. I try to follow the grammar rules, Janie. When I don't, I imagine my 10th grade English teacher giving me the stink eye :)

    1. Oh, dear. I often think of one of my high school English teachers. I refer to her as Barge Makalar. Her name was Marge Bakalar. She was thought of by many people as a great teacher and was much celebrated. She was so unkind to me one day that I lost all respect for her. She has passed away.

  12. I love your Tip Tuesday, no matter what day they fall:) I find them very helpful.
Are you sleeping? I think of you every time I'm wide-eyed in the middle of the night.

    1. I'm sleeping better. I'm doing well at getting up on time to go to work. I was off today so I slept until 1 p.m. I use my days off to catch up on rest. Since I slept so late, I'll probably be awake late, but I'm confident that I'll be able to get up to go to work tomorrow. I think the most important part of my sleep routine has been to relax and not get upset when I can't sleep. When I'm awake at night, I'll think of you. That way we can imagine that we're thinking of each other at the same time.

  13. When you download facebook messenger, one of the prompts asks you to use it as your messenger service. Since it's called messenger, you think it's safe to click. Buttttt, what it really means is, can I take over and be your default messenger application. Hopefully you get your phone back to normal soon. :)

  15. When it comes to commas, Grammarly is always telling me there are too many. ☺ Glad you got your Facebook issue sorted out. It can be so aggravating, at times, Have a good weekend!

  16. When I write formally, I know the rules and use them. On my blog I take liberties, because I can :D

I love that "i before e" meme! Do you know, it took me almost my whole life to realize I was spelling "wiener" wrong - I thought it was one of the exceptions to the rule :) weiner weiner weiner lol

  19. Thanks for the reminder. I harbor a special hatred for this kind of comma abuse:

My best friend Andy, is a bit shy.

    Would that annoy you, too?
