MOVIE MOVIE WEEKEND: CHASING THE CURVE

Hi - Still down with the flu so I've been watching lots of TV and movies. Two quick movie reviews (both movies available on DVD) and a link:

First movie is a documentary called Chasing Madoff.

Harry Markopolos was a Wall Street numbers-cruncher guy who was the first to figure out -- or at least the first to tell the truth -- that Bernard Madoff was running a ponzi scheme. He doggedly pursued the story in spite of threats to him and his family. It took almost ten years before anyone dared to listen and stop Madoff.

It's a fascinating story of heroics and cowardice. The documentary also includes interviews with some of the people wiped out by Madoff. Seal of approval.

Second movie is Trouble With The The Curve.

This isn't just a baseball movie. It's about relationships. I thought it was interesting -- sometimes sad and sometimes amusing. I'm not a Clint Eastwood fan, but he's okay in this. Amy Adams plays his daughter. I love her. Seal of approval.

For you Downton Abbey fans, here's a link The Hurricane sent me: http://www.avclub.com/articles/downton-abbey-season-3-episode-4,91226/. The link will take you to a review of the show that focuses on the most recent episode and how gender roles come into play on the show. I thought it was interesting that after Lady Cora gave Lord Grantham and the pompous ass doctor a dressing down for allowing Sybil to die that she banned Robert from their bed. It's the only recourse she has to keep him away from her. If she divorced him, then she'd be penniless and without status.

If you read the review, beware of the comments that follow it. Some numb nuts put in repeated comments stating what will happen in the last episode of the season. I already knew, but I don't want it to be spoiled for you.

Thank you for all your kind wishes. I promise I'm resting and drinking lots of water. I feel great when I'm asleep. The problem is being awake and thinking, Oh, my I think I'm gonna die. The CDC has declared an epidemic.

Love,

Janie

P.S. I'm reading blogs part of the time when I'm awake so I'm keeping up with you. It makes me feel better to know you're out there.

  4. I saw Trouble With The Curve and loved it as well. :) A bit predictable, but good none the less. Fell better darling... and I did jump in with both feet. The link to the Breast Cancer 3-day is up on the blog... feel free to pass it along as you see fit. :)

  5. I feel so out of the loop cause I don't know who Downtown Abbey is. Apparently, she's pretty famous, and I can't believe I don't know anything about it, maybe these fancy shows don't make out here in the wild wild west. Hope you're feeling better..:)

  6. Chasing Madoff reminds me of The Insider with Russel Crowe and Al Pacino. Brilliant film.

    1. Oh, I love The Insider. You're right about the concept being the same. Whistleblowers have a heck of a time.

  13. Dear Janie, I didn't use the link because I don't know what happens and I want to be surprised. I surely was surprised when Sybil died and there are so many threads to the story right now that I'm finding it hard to hold onto them!

I did go to the library website and get my name on the list (I'm #25) to read "The Chronicles of Downton Abbey," which is about the social issues etc raised in Season 3. I figure that I won't get the book until well after the season sends--in two weeks. Last year I read the first book--"The World of Downton Abbey," and enjoyed it immensely.

I hope you are feeling better. Continue to take care of yourself. Lots of rest and liquids. Peace.

  17. Oh, Janieeeeee, I'm sorry you're so sick. :( Glad to know that at least you're able to sleep. Will have you in my prayers for a soon & full recovery.

I haven't seen the Abbey yet, but this week I had to do a write-up for a Downton Abbey-inspired Tea that the store I work at is hosting, so I read up on it and am intrigued...

Thanks for the movie recs and feel better!

  18. I couldn't get through Trouble with the Curve. The story dragged on much longer than it needed to. I don't mind if screenplays dwell, as long as it doesn't turn into navel-gazing, and this one did exactly that.

I hope you get well soon, and that the CDC stands down. ;)
