Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,
PTA = PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON
Anderson is one of my favorite filmmakers. Recently, I was pleased to see him rack up some Golden Globe Awards for his 2025 movie, One Battle After Another (Rated R, 2 hours 41 minutes, Streams on HBO Max or whatever they're calling it now they can't make up their minds).
This is a wild ride of a movie. It's a dark comedy, a thriller, has all sorts of crazy stuff going on. I won't even try to get into the plot. I enjoyed One Battle After Another and felt entertained throughout even though it's quite long.
I don't know if it's worthy of the 13 Oscar nominations it received. I wouldn't have given that Best Actor nod to Leonardo DiCaprio while leaving out Jesse Plemons in Bugonia.
I hope to see PTA win something.
Oh! I glimpsed Alana Haim a couple of times and was excited to see her. I thought she was wonderful with Cooper Hoffman in PTA's Licorice Pizza, but she really doesn't do anything in One Battle.
My favorite Anderson movie, and one of my favorite movies that I re-watch every few years, is 1999's Magnolia. It's Anderson's masterpiece––so far.
Who knows what Paul Thomas Anderson will bring us in the future?
Have you see One Battle After Another? Some people think it's overrated. What do you think? It also has seven Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.
Infinities of love,
Janie Junebug

We saw it the other day. I was kind of...meh. I think Gregg enjoyed it more than me. Part of the problem is I don't care for Leonardo DC.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't worship DiCaprio.
DeleteAlso, Sean Penn's character creeped me out....
ReplyDeleteColonel Steven J. Lockjaw should creep you out. I liked Benicio del Toro's character and wish his part had been larger.
DeleteHis movies always feel bloated to me.
ReplyDeletexoxo
I think that's true of The Master.
DeleteI've not seen it yet, but will make it a point to watch. I seem to get sucked into watching a series rather than a movie. An exception would be "The Apartment", which I find myself watching whenever I happen on it.
ReplyDeleteI love The Apartment. At this time of the year, I try to watch as many movies with award nominations as I can.
DeleteThat sounds interesting. I do think the nominations are ridiculous sometimes. One film recently had 17 or 19 nominations.
ReplyDeleteSinners has 16 Oscar nominations--the most any movie has ever had. It's described as a horror movie and a vampire thriller. That's not the kind of thing I like so I doubt if I'll watch it.
DeleteI am pathetic as I've seen none of the movies nominated for an academy award! In my younger years, I would have at least known about most of the nominated films, but this time I had only heard of a couple!
ReplyDeleteWhen I watched The Golden Globes I was surprised by the number of movies and actors I'd never heard of. I've started trying to watch more nominated movies.
DeleteOh how I loved Magnolia! Haven’t seen One Battle After Another
ReplyDeleteWe might be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.
DeleteI haven't seen it. Thanks for the review. I'll keep an eye out for it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not promising anyone will like it. It's an unusual movie with some good and some not-so-good performances. I do think it's a compelling movie.
