Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,
Your Queen must discuss a very serious issue with you: "ALOT" is not a word.
It's "a lot". And please don't try to replace "a lot" with "allot". That action could push us over the edge, and we would not be amused.
Infinities of love,
Janie Junebug
I am a non-violent person, but repeated use of alot could drive me to war.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I want to grab the nearest non-violent weapon and use it on people, but then I remind myself that non-violent weapon is an oxymoron.
DeleteThat one, I know. ;)
ReplyDeleteOf course you do. You're a genius.
DeleteI follow a Grammar FB page with loads of stuffies like this. I love grammar faux paws ~~ LOL >~~>
ReplyDeleteRon for Sophie, hey sometimes I feel like SOphie!!
Grammar faux paws can be interesting, but they bring out my violent side.
DeleteAlright then, I won't use alot!
ReplyDeleteWhat's your address? I need to send a "friend" to visit you.
DeleteDear Janie, alot is an example that can be matched with "for awhile." The word "awhile" means "for a while." so to use "for awhile (one word)" we are really saying "for for a while"!!!!! Peace.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dee.
DeleteYou are right! It's a bad habit that I sometimes fall prey to.
ReplyDeleteWe all have bad habits. My nail polish looks less than perfect today, and many other days.
DeleteI tried, fruitlessly mostly, to teach my students: "You don't write 'alittle' so don't write 'alot.' Mostly, students were hopeless in remembering this.
ReplyDeleteAs I typed, the program kept changing these to the correct spelling. Maybe I have forced the program into submission!
You are powerful.
DeleteI see "alot" a lot, too, & it bugs me!! What's your opinion of "awhile"?
ReplyDeleteSee Dee's comment on this topic above. "A while" is a noun, and "awhile" is an adverb.
DeleteAnother one of my peeves. I know I never screw that one up!
ReplyDelete-andi
Bully for you.
DeleteYeah, I see a lot of that. Ha. I even know of a case where a writer insisted his editor stop correcting his use of "alot" because, although he knew it was wrong, he wanted to write it that way anyway!
ReplyDeleteWas it because a character was writing it and the character was stupid?
DeleteNope, no such excuse. The book's writer just liked spelling it that way!
DeleteA firing squad would be too kind.
DeleteThank you for writing this!!! I see it "a lot"!! Hugs XX
ReplyDeleteThank you for your correct usage, Barb.
DeleteWho says "alot" every one should know it is a lot but then we do wonder about the youth of the day...........shortening words all the time and writing non words like they are words.......
ReplyDeleteSo true, Jo-Anne.
DeleteTHat's super annoying, almost as bad as their and they're...
ReplyDeleteand there.
DeleteThat makes alot of sense. ;)
ReplyDeleteOkay... just as long as I can still say it as one word. :)
ReplyDeleteYou should say it however you want, darlin'.
