I SEE A LOT OF ALOT

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

Your Queen must discuss a very serious issue with you: "ALOT" is not a word.

It's "a lot". And please don't try to replace "a lot" with "allot". That action could push us over the edge, and we would not be amused.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. I am a non-violent person, but repeated use of alot could drive me to war.

    1. Sometimes I want to grab the nearest non-violent weapon and use it on people, but then I remind myself that non-violent weapon is an oxymoron.

  5. Dear Janie, alot is an example that can be matched with "for awhile." The word "awhile" means "for a while." so to use "for awhile (one word)" we are really saying "for for a while"!!!!! Peace.

  6. You are right! It's a bad habit that I sometimes fall prey to.

    1. We all have bad habits. My nail polish looks less than perfect today, and many other days.

  7. I tried, fruitlessly mostly, to teach my students: "You don't write 'alittle' so don't write 'alot.' Mostly, students were hopeless in remembering this.

As I typed, the program kept changing these to the correct spelling. Maybe I have forced the program into submission!

  8. I see "alot" a lot, too, & it bugs me!! What's your opinion of "awhile"?

    1. See Dee's comment on this topic above. "A while" is a noun, and "awhile" is an adverb.

  10. Yeah, I see a lot of that. Ha. I even know of a case where a writer insisted his editor stop correcting his use of "alot" because, although he knew it was wrong, he wanted to write it that way anyway!

    1. Was it because a character was writing it and the character was stupid?

    2. Nope, no such excuse. The book's writer just liked spelling it that way!
