It's cold in Florida. At least in my part of the state we don't have iguanas. When South Florida gets cold enough––and it's cold enough––iguanas fall out of the trees. I would not want an iguana landing on my head.
Since Friday, we've had temps in the 20s at night. This is the longest period of extended cold I've experienced during my 13 1/2 years in Florida. Of course, much of the U.S. suffers from far worse with whiteout conditions from a blizzard and snow falling so fast that the plows can't keep up with it.
How much snow do you have?
When Franklin went out for his morning potty on Monday, he came in shivering. I felt so sorry for him. I've never seen my thick-coated dog shiver before.
He found a sunbeam in the family room and I covered him with a blanket.
After a bit, he moved to his bed and took the blanket with him. My guy needed a nap.
I also took off his elf jammies after getting this photo, although he never tried to remove them on his own, which shocked me. Maybe Franklin has changed his opinion about clothing in his old age.

DeleteIguanas fall out of trees? Really? I'm trying to work out what temperature thingy you use. i guess it's the one where 32 is freezing point? So 20 is really cold.
ReplyDeleteYes, freezing is 32. Some people have wind chill temps way below 0.

DeleteWell, at least Franklin and Penelope have warm blankies and cozy jammies! I would say at the moment we have about a foot of snow on the ground here. And it's snowing some more right now.
ReplyDeleteThe worst blizzard I experienced in Maryland gave us 3 feet of snow. It was a mess.
DeleteIt's a balmy 22 degrees here right now. First day in over a week we didn't have wind chill warnings. I'm sure the furbabies would be glad to see 50 degrees. I can't believe it's been that cold in Florida! Of course we had wind chills of 30-40 below so not a surprise it is cold all over. We're still not expectd to get to 30 degrees even the rest of the week...but warmer. 20s! Happy birds and rabbits up here today. ;)

DeleteNo sticking snow as of yet for us. Weird. I'm hoping it holds off until the 24th, the day after I go in for surgery. Not going to lie, sitting in my jammies, watching the snow fall knowing I don't have to deliver mail in it (this year anyways) is something I'm actually looking forward to. I haven't done that in 20 years or so. We are turning the heat down considerably at night though to help with the dryness. Th cat particularly likes the heated cocoon she finds herself in between the Hubs and I around 1 am.
ReplyDeleteWhere does your dog like to sleep? The dryness from having the heat on is bothering me. My throat is a bit sore and I'm congested. My nose is dry. I don't feel as if I can reduce the heat at night because the floors are so cold. It's hard to keep the house warm. I also need it to be a decent temp when I wake up since I work from home. I'll be thinking of you in your jammies, watching the snow when it happens.
DeleteIt was very cold here last Thursday through Sunday...8 degrees with much worst wind chill. But now back up to the mid 50's by New Year DAY. No snow here though. Now when these iguanas fall out of the trees, are they dead or just shocked? I have heard of this, but never heard if they are alive or dead.
ReplyDeleteThey need sun & heat to keep them warm. Without it they freeze and go into a coma, so they're immobile. If they're in a tree when that happens, they fall from the tree. I imagine some of them die, but most seem to come back to life when it warms up. I don't know what will happen to them with this extended period of cold, though. I saw an article about a guy who put some frozen iguanas in his car (I don't know why except in some parts of the world people eat iguanas and consider them a delicacy so maybe he had dinner plans). They came back to life in the car and he had an accident.

ReplyDeleteI read a headline that said there was snow in parts of Florida, but I don't know where. It couldn't have been very much. If it snowed in my city, it would be insane with people who don't know how to drive in snow/ice.
DeleteBrrr. 20F! Does the temp drop as low as that every year? It dropped overnight to 54 here, which is downright arctic, and it hasn't yet begun the climb to an expected high of 65. SG will be wearing his winter coat. I love how Franklin and Penelope drag their blankets along with them.
ReplyDeleteLast winter we had one night when it got down in the 20s. I think that was the first time the temperature got that low since I moved here in 2009. Having an extended period of cold like this is crazy for Florida.

ReplyDeleteI used to live in places where it got much colder. The longer I live here, the more quickly I get cold in higher temps than I used to experience. Plus, our houses aren't built for cold weather.

DeleteIt's cute that Franklin took his blanket with him! That's a trick Olga has not yet mastered.
ReplyDeleteFranklin had never before allowed me to cover him with a blanket. When I tried to do so a few other times, he shook off the blanket and walked away, so he was very cold.
