THE LIE

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

I have recovered from my very nasty cold, and I thank you for your concern and good wishes.

However, I do not feel "right". Someone (a sort of business associate, not a friend) criticized my editing. What he wrote is not true. I'm terribly hurt. No one has ever said such things to me. I'm so hurt that it's debilitating – don't want to leave the house, don't want to take the chance I'll be hurt again.

I sent an email back to this person and corrected him, politely and forcefully. He did not apologize. Said nothing about it. What he said was based on lies, apparently told to him by someone else, who refuses to back me up and tell the truth.

I'll get over it. I always get over these depressions. But it's hard right now, so I'm content to hide at home. I feel worthless. I have never accomplished anything.

I wonder if that person would have criticized me if he knew how hurt I would be? I wonder if he would have criticized me if he knew I did the work for free? Why was it necessary to be so unkind?

I'm going to watch Netflix Screaming, which some people think is called Netflix Streaming, but I know better.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Hi Janie .. things can be frustratingly unfair at times .. but I'm glad your nasty cold has gone away .. look after yourself .. the person doesn't deserve thinking about ... with thoughts Hilary

  2. Who would dare criticize the grammar queen? Send the grammar police after him!

  3. Some people don't know what they don't know. And some people enjoy making waves. Don't concern yourself. Don't let anyone have that kind of power over you.

  4. Oh, Janie, I don't know how I missed this post yesterday. There are jerks in this world, unfortunately, and they will always be that. Don't let this jerk steal from you the pleasure of a job you did out of the goodness of your heart, and did well. Hugs to you. And our new fur baby, Tyson, a blue heeler, sends his greetings to your wonderful family.

  5. I do not understand why some people feel they have the right to act in such a manner and say hurtful things to another person, maybe that is because I am not such a person and don't go around trying to hurt others.

  9. Janie:
I've been criticized my entire life, first by art directors and now by literary agents. Editing, in my opinion, is an art form and your opinion of your work is all that really matters. Remember, when God made artists he created critics from the scrap that was left over. Take care and don't let little minds get you down.

  10. Janie, you are an amazing woman and editor. Your editing skills flow with understanding, professionalism, and empathy. You know how to relate and what questions to ask. People can be mean, but do not allow anyone to steal your joy. Keep editing.

  11. Oh no, no. I'm so upset to hear this! I am with you, why can't people be nice? What is the point of saying mean things? And the fact that it wasn't true on top of it, just makes it so obscene.

You must know that we all support you and know the caliber of editor you are. And even more importantly, the caliber of person. I'm so sorry that he hurt you and I hope he comes to the realization that he did the wrong thing.

    Much love to you!

  12. We live in an unaccountable age... people can criticize and insult without ever having to see an emotion. I'm going with Fishducky on this one... put some pants on and go get yourself a cupcake at a fancy schmancy bakery. :)

  13. Let me see if I can unravel this: a business associate sent you a scathing email of something you did pro-bono, and all his malformed opinions were based on second-hand lies and shaped by the hand of unprofessional idiocy? That about sum it up? I understand being upset. But soon enough you'll come around to righteous anger at the unprofessional jackasses that lead to filling your eyes and mind with their gossipy lies. You are in the right, right? Rest your head knowing you are on the side of truth.

  14. Aha! So you ARE saying the "screaming" on purpose---of course you are, because you're an excellent editor and would catch such a thing if it was a typo. What always helps me get past someone being a jerk to me is to recognize that the nastiness was caused by something wrong happening within them---which helps me feel sorry for them and that's easier to deal with than anger.

I'm glad to hear the cold is better.
