TIP TUESDAY

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

As one or none of you may recall, when I changed the header and title on my blog, I promised thought considered decided  mentioned that my blog would become more writing oriented.

One of these changes comes in the form of TIP TUESDAY.

Every Tuesday, I hope to offer some tip to help you improve your writing or provide you with a point to ponder.

If you want to offer a tip for use in this feature, please email it to me at dumpedfirstwife@gmail.com. If I can use the tip on a Tuesday, I'll give you credit for it and provide a link to your blog.

You're also welcome to email me with any questions you have, such as

  • How do I spell anomotopoeia unamotapeia enamomapeeya? (Because how can you look up a word in the dictionary if you don't know the first letter?)
  • Will you explain why algebra problems always have two trains? (How in the hell would I know that? I'm not The Queen of Math.)
  • What do the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit mean? (You won't believe me if I tell you.)
  • Should I use it's or its? (Now we're headed in the right direction.)
I'll answer your questions--if I know the answer--on Fridays if Franklin and Penelope don't want to blog. They get pretty tired when they play chase around the big bush in the backyard. They won't allow blogging to interfere with naps, playtime, or nom nom nom we love our kibble. I feel the same way--except for the kibble--but I add any form of sexual activity making whoopie  a kiss for my beloved Willy Dunne Wooters to my list.

Baby, I'll ring in the new year with a
kiss for you. Thanks for asking.

How can I think about grammar now? Weird Al, please help.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Loved Weird Al's video--but what DO the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit mean?

  2. It's obvious a problem with algebra is its switch from trollies to trains, even in my lifetime. Or, was that statistics? It's so hard to tell.

    1. Trollies? Wow! You're older than God. It seems more likely to me that it would be algebra because I could do some algebra, but statistics is beyond me.

  3. This sounds like useful fun! (Perhaps that was the desired effect? Affect? Um, can you tell me a handy way to keep those straight?) Fozzie says being a dog is truly exhausting even at a basic rest level.

    1. Yes, on Friday I'll tell you the difference between affect and effect. It's much simpler than you might think.

  4. Hey Janie,

Still wondering why abbreviation is such a long word. Did you know that "tip" is a UK word meaning "landfill site"?

    1. I had no idea. I enjoy the differences between English English and U.S. English. And then we have Canadian English, too.

  5. I love Weird Al's song version better than the original. Thicke looked too full of himself in the video and he is one smarmy $%#! I look forward to the smell like a teen-what does that mean on Friday. I hated those Math problems. I once wrote that as long as they get to their destination, it doesn't matter. I did not pass that test

    1. I doubt if I'll get around to the lyrics this week. I wish the two trains would run into each other.

  6. Hmmm...is everyone agreed that it's time to de-hyphenate "online" officially and for always? I hate seeing on-line. Or web-site. No bueno!

    1. I haven't seen online or web-site in years, though at the last newspaper where I worked about a million years ago, we had to write Web site for articles.

  7. Funny you mention Algebra. It was my first class when I went back to college to get my degree at 40! I got a D on my first test and almost passed out. Then my wonderful engineer hubby helped me get on track and I aced it from then on. Will definitely look forward to your Tuesday tips. Lord knows I need all I can get.

    1. Before we had to move to Illinois, I wanted to get my RN. The first class I took was some sort of math. I felt lost. My daughter was in high school. She tutored me, and I got an A.

  8. Makes me afraid to blog--LOL!
I have friends who don't spell well at all and have very poor grammatical skills but as long as I know what they mean it doesn't bother me at all. But it will drive me a little bonkers if I read those same errors in a book, magazine, billboard, flyer...anywhere printed for the public, I guess. Maybe I don't count personal blogs because I don't count it in the letters I receive and blogs are more like a little letter to me. Probably because that is how I feel when I write mine. But it will bother me in the "professional" type blogs. I know. I am strange.

    1. No reason to be afraid to blog. Keep blogging as you always have. You know I love you and your blog and Karma and Ian and Dagan and Leah. You're right about items printed for use by the public. Those writer are the people I want to straighten out.

  9. I need to get a domain name, and change my header. It's such a pain. I like the header I have already, but I found out there's another Planet of the Apels. :(

    1. Who'd a thunk there'd be another Planet of the Apels? I think your title is charming.
