GRATITUDE TUESDAY: JARED LETO

Dear Jared . . . and Maxwell,

Jared, now that you've won an Academy Award, it's high time for me to express my gratitude for getting to look at you. Your reflection in my eyes makes everything sparkle.

I first saw you when you were Jordan on My So-Called Life. I didn't catch the show when it was on during 1994-95. I watched it some time later on DVD. As I gloried in each episode, you were my hottie du jour.

I didn't know what happened to you, but all of a sudden, you turned up nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award! And I still liked looking at you.

I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club yet, and I might have ignored it because I have a serious dislike thing going on with Matthew McConaughey. But I know you will make this movie good, Jared. And you're still pretty. Hard to believe you're 42.

Now that I'm looking at photos of you, I realize you've been around all along. I didn't recognize your different looks in Fight Club and Prefontaine. You had corn rows in Panic Room. That was YOU? And I had no idea you're in a band called Thirty Seconds to Mars with your older brother Shannon.

I knew you were favored to win Sunday night for your role as a transgender addict with AIDS.

And you came through, baby.

How cool is it that you brought your mom to the show?

You acceptance speech was as beautiful as you are. I wish I could embed a video of you, shooting star, but the show is copyrighted by the Oscars. However, Time Entertainment  printed what you said:

“Incredible. Ellen, I love you. To my fellow nominees, I’m so proud to share this journey with you. I’m in awe and have so much respect for you all. To the Academy, thank you.
In 1971, in Bossier City Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged here kids to be creative and work hard and do something special. That girl was my mother and she’s here tonight. I just want to say ‘I love you mom, thank you for teaching me to dream.’
To my brother Shannon, the best big brother in the world: Thank you so much for sharing this insane adventure that is 30 Seconds to Mars and for being my best friend
To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight in places like Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to to say we are here, and as you struggle to make your dreams happen and live the impossible, we are thinking of you tonight.
[Then he did the typical Oscar thank you....before moving on to a more heartfelt subject:]
This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS. And to those of you who have ever felt injustice because of who you are and who you love, I stand here in front of the world with you and for you.
Thank you so much, and good night.
Well done, Jared. Here's to looking at you for many more years. If your mom isn't available to be your date the next time you're nominated, then feel free to give me a call. I have a feeling I'll be available.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

P.S. I thought Ellen was great. She makes hosting look so easy. In Memoriam got me caught up on deaths. I didn't know Billy Jack was gone (one tin soldier rides away). Loved Bette Midler. Great performance of Happy by Pharrell Williams. That song always puts me in a toe tapping good mood, so let's finish with the video.

  1. Never heard of him until the Oscars.
Sigh....I guess I should really get out more.

    1. I don't get out much. I watch DVDs and read books right here in my little Florida bungalow.

  2. We didn't get to see the show this year, but I did see clips of Jared's speech on the news. His inside is even prettier than his outside.

    1. I was VERY impressed by his speech, and so pleased that many winners thanked their mothers or their parents. Even the director who won said in Spanish to his mother that his Oscar was for her.

  3. I was delighted that Jared won. I saw his acceptance speech and thought is was beautiful And what is wrong with Matthew McConaughey? He is one of my favorites. I loved him in We Are Marshall.

    1. I don't know what's wrong with Matthew. I've just never liked him. I find him creepy, but maybe I'll feel differently after I see Dallas Buyers Club.

  4. This year the Oscars presentation was an interesting show, and I think Ellen did a good job. I haven't been aware of Jared Leto until now but he's someone I'll be watching.

    1. I enjoyed the show, especially because I can skim through the recording and watch what I want. I thought it was hilarious when Ellen ordered pizza and then collected money for it. I also enjoyed it when she gave Bradley Cooper two scratch-off tickets because he didn't win an Oscar.

  5. How nice that Jared is more than a pretty face!

    1. Isn't it great that we can find beautiful souls all over the place? I find you on the blogosphere, in my neighborhood, and now, on the Oscars. Jared was so eloquent.

  6. I thought I might try to see some of the movies that won awards. Planning to start with Dallas Buyers Club. You've got me curious, what's the serious dislike thing with Matthew McConaughey?

    1. I'm sorry. I don't know. I've never liked him. I have Dallas Buyers Club on the way from Netflix. Maybe I'll like Matthew now.

  7. I watched for awhile, but then start to feel blue over not seeing any of the movies...my kids didn't even take us to see Frozen! Glad I can go check out things I missed worth catching though.

    1. I no longer feel bad that I haven't seen the movies. I can enjoy the show, knowing that Netflix will get the movies to me as soon as they can.

  8. *Applause* indeed, to Jared Leto. Spectacular speech. What a delightful human being. So refreshing ...

  9. Happy cracks me up.. I love that I think even I would look like I fit in dancing in the video. :) But Pink's "Over the Rainbow" blew me away as I've mentioned before. His acceptance speech was great, although I could have done without the Ukraine parts... I get it, but honestly a kid living in the Ukraine right now is SO far from the Oscars, I just didn't get it. Dallas Buyers is on my list to see, as is Nebraska, which I've been told is really, really good, but very cerebral.

    1. I could dance to Happy, and I can't dance. I think Jared mentioned Ukraine to remind people that while we're celebrating, the suffering in the world hasn't stopped. Willy Dunne Wooters and I watched Nebraska over the weekend. We LOVED it.

  10. He was gorgeous as Rayon. I loved his speech. After you see the movie, you will at least respect Matthew M. Did you read that the surprised pizza delivery guy received a $1000 tip?

    1. Yes, I saw that about the pizza guy. Bully for him. As they walked out, I heard Ellen saying to him, We're not going backstage like I said we were. He must have been so shocked. I promise to respect Matthew.

  11. The right people won this year, I think. Not sure about Cate Blanchett, because I haven't seen Blue Jasmine yet.

  12. Cate Blanchett is a very good actress, but I did not like Blue Jasmine. She was the last person I would have chosen to win. Maybe I didn't understand something about the movie or her character.

  13. 30 seconds to mars is my wife's favorite band and that is probably the only man besides me she would marry.

  14. My son played in a movie with Matthew McConaughey. I never liked him. He seems conceited. I only half way like him because my son said he was nice to him.

    1. What movie was it? Does your son act regularly? I think M.M. seems full of himself and isn't a very good actor, but I hope Dallas Buyers Club will change my mind.

  15. Wow. I have NO idea who that is. Or that other person you mentioned.

  16. Which other person? Who? What are we talking about?

  17. I have a serious weakness for handsome guys in long hair with beautiful eyes and smiles. Hey! I'm a child of the 60s. And he is so sweet! I look forward to seeing the movie. I have a feeling he is going to break my heart in it. ;)

    1. I know what you mean, both concerning the long hair and Jared Leto breaking our hearts in that movie. I love it that Willy Dunne Wooters keeps his hair just a little bit long.

  18. Dallas Buyer's Club was excellent and he was more than deserving of the win. I do know what you mean about Matthew McConaughey, something about him bothers me, too. Ellen was fantastic, as always and the show was a very enjoyable watch. I don't watch TV but I did tune in for this as I am a big fan of movies. Enjoyed your post. :)

    1. Thank you. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about Matthew -- too aggressive? don't like the sound of his voice? I'm not sure.

    2. I don't know, either. I will say, he was excellent in the movie, Mud. If you haven't seen that, rent it. Other than that, he bothers me. Maybe he appears dirty or something. LOL I know, that sounds terrible but I can't put my finger on it.

    3. It doesn't sound terrible because I quite often think he's kind of gross looking. Didn't his neighbors call the police one time because he was making so much noise playing bongo drums in the nude? Anyway, now that I've watched the movie, I think his lack of likability is exactly what makes him perfect for Dallas Buyers Club. Ron Woodroof in real life may have been a nice man, but in the movie, he's not a great guy. MM is perfect to play the redneck, mouthy Texan. The character grows and changes, though, so I now appreciate MM's acting more. I found some articles that say Ron Woodroof's sister and daughter thought MM was perfect for the part. I saw photos of Woodroof and MM (after the weight loss) side-by-side, and there is a resemblance. Woodroof is portrayed as brash and arrogant, which is exactly how I see MM. I think another reason I tend to dislike him is that almost every picture I see of him is a shirtless shot at the beach, where he's working out or showing off. I can see shirtless photos of Ryan Gosling and say, Mmmmmm, yeah, but Ryan Gosling seems to be such a nice, sensitive guy.

  19. Jared Leto doesn't act very often. He spends most of his time on his band. Maybe he'll act more now that he has an Academy Award.
