WHAT? WEDNESDAY: STORES

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

Are there stores you won't enter because you think they're too expensive or the merchandise is inappropriate or whatever?

When I lived in Illinois, my retirement job was working part time at Macy's (X said I didn't contribute; it was true – I didn't contribute to his gambling habit). The ladies – and I use the term "ladies" loosely – at the Bible study I attended would not go in Macy's.

It's too expensive, they'd say.

But look at this great sweater I'm wearing, I'd say. It was 4.99 on clearance without my employee discount. We have great sales all the time.

We don't go in Macy's, they'd say. It's too expensive.

Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgh!

People are usually astonished when I tell them how great Victoria's Secret is. I know they put all that sexy stuff in the window (one woman at Bible study said she put her hands over her grandson's eyes when they passed VS), but they have regular cotton undies and bras and jammies, too.

I get my pink granny panties at Victoria's Secret, I'd say.

Naaaaaaaaah. We don't go in Victoria's Secret, they'd say.

I've never been in a store that sells, uh, sex toys and stuff. I'm not much of a shopper because it's so easy to order stuff online, but I'm not afraid to go in a store even if I know everything is too expensive or the clothes wouldn't fit me. It's fun to look.

Now how about you? Are there stores you won't enter because you think they're too expensive or the merchandise is inappropriate or whatever?

I think this post is #994.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Neiman Marcus in Northbrook Illinois. It looked more like a museum than a department store. I remember thinking, " I could buy a used car for the price of that dress."

    1. I've never been in the vicinity of a Neiman Marcus, but I received their catalog a few times. Pricey!

  2. Er, I guess there are stores I've probably never been in, but only because I'm not a big shopper so I tend to gravitate toward the places that I'm more certain are going to have what I want at a price I'm willing to pay. But the high end stores are the BEST to shop for their clearance sales. The only time I remember being too intimidated to even step inside a store was is Milano---I swear, the place had only about 5 items for sale...purses, I think...and each one was set on it's very own pedestal. I've no idea if it's true, but I'd heard that in Europe it's considered rude to walk into a store if you have no intention of buying, so I just gawked from the outside and then kept walking.

    1. Absolutely right about the high-end stores. I didn't know that about Europe. I'll have to ask The Hurricane. She's been everywhere.

  3. I love to go in the stores and just look. I shop at Bergners and Kohls and I think that they are comparable to Macys. On the other side of the coin, I have found cute clothes at Gordmans and Target.

    1. The Hurricane got some cute sweaters at a very good price in Kohls when she was in college. She probably still wears them. She wears clothes she had in high school (she's 27).

  4. I would NOT go to Abercrombie & Fitch because of their attitude to non-gorgeous teens!!

  5. A&F had a store in the mall where we lived in Illinois. The music coming from the store was so loud there's no way I would have gone in, and it didn't interest The Hurricane. I'm glad she didn't want their clothes. She said everything there was ridiculously over priced.

    1. This is what I was going to say. I hate the loud music, and the prices are ridiculous. And snobby.

  6. I would definitely not go to high-end stores in say. . . Paris, the round trip ticket is just too expensive lol. Okay, bad joke.
I like VS and Macys also, but I don't shop much anymore. If I do it's online when they are having a sale. I never really think about which store I'll shop at or avoid, I just go for affordable prices.

    1. Good joke. I liked it. I love shopping for online clearance items from Macy's and VS.

  7. Hmmmm. If there was a sale on something I was interested in, no store would be off limits. And for what it's worth, I love VS.

    1. No wonder we get along. We are VS women. So is The Hurricane.

  8. Nope. I mean being raised with two sisters and a single mom I don't shock easy. I have often gone in VS to buy my wife something or with her.

    1. When I used to take The Hurricane to VS, I often saw men there shopping with wives/girlfriends. I know Willy Dunne Wooters wouldn't do that, but it doesn't matter since I shop online most of the time. It's not that he dislikes VS. He just avoids stores like the plague.

    2. That is true too, I am not a huge store person. I like home, lol.

  9. I'm not much of a shopper. When I need something I go "Junk Store Shopping" which is essentially checking Goodwill and Salvation Army for a used version. I very seldom buy new things for myself. That's what my husband is for. ;-)

    1. I used to shop at Goodwill when I lived in Illinois. Now I don't shop much at all because I am poor. I look for bargains online.

  10. I never avoid stores because I fear the merchandise is too expensive. It's just that there isn't much I need these days.

  11. Since I was the younger brother and the 'go to' guy for my 2 older sisters to pick up everything for them from nylons and 'special K', I have no fear or trepidation about going into any store. Thanks sisters!! lol

  12. Nope. I like to check out all stores - except maybe "adult stores." Those don't interest me. But I do like Victoria's Secret!

    1. Another VS lady! Do you shop VS online? I get lots of great stuff on clearance, and they have nice clothes online.

  13. I think it might have been Neiman Marcus in the Mega Mall in Minneapolis (Mall of America) that I went in when I knew I probably couldn't afford a tiny do-dad--and they had a piano player! No lie! Just playing for the wandering customers. I was one of the few people who stopped to compliment him.

I have been in one once, but have no desire to ever return to an "adult" store. I did not know where to look and I think I was quite red most of the time I was in there--LOL! But most stores don't bother me at all. These days I do most of my shopping online, anyways. :)

    1. When we lived near Seattle, sometimes I shopped in Nordstrom's. They had great sales and also had a guy playing the piano.

  14. Not out of a moral sense. Maybe because what the store represents is so heinous and the patrons so deplorable and the merchandise pandering and insulting that I won't come within five feet of those stores: Abercrombie, Lidz, Hollister, Forever 21, basically wherever they have loud thumping music (yes, I am old, old enough to know I don't need hearing damage whilst shopping) and aggrandize eating disorders. If a teenager frequents the store, it's probably not for me.

    1. I agree about the loud music. I knew a young woman who applied for a managerial position in one of those stores. They rejected her because she wasn't skinny enough to wear their clothes. Wearing the clothes was a job requirement. I say that's discrimination.

  15. I just never go to browse in Auto Zone. Those guys get grease all over everything. If I want something in there, I walk to the counter and ask for it. ....well, you said or whatever!

My back and knee hurt too much to browse any more! But, there is no reason not to go in any store as far as I am concerned. I don't go into mall stores that are obviously teen stores. I don't go into any store that does not have an electric cart for me to ride..

    1. I know what you mean about Auto Zone. Any store that carries tires or stuff you need for your car is dirty.
