I NEVER GAVE UP ON YOU

Dear Eight-Track Tapes And Console . . . and Maxwell,

My darlings, for years I've longed to play you again. What some people might think was annoying about you––the tape can fall apart, you might break up a song into two parts––never bothered me. You were part of my high school days, when I sat on my bed and played Cat Stevens' love songs over and over.

But I couldn't listen to you. No, not even you, Fleetwood Mac. I bade farewell to my eight-track tape player years ago. But, you my tapes, I refused to let you go. I was sure you would play again.

And now you are. When Favorite Young Man discovered this console at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, I jumped at the chance to add you to my bedroom because you . . .

have an eight-track tape player, seen here with the radio. And you work.

To put the icing on the cake, you have a turntable. Oh, how I adore you.

You appeared to have never been used. You came to me in perfect condition, complete with the paperwork that shows you were delivered to a man named Ronald in 1972.

And now you are mine, all mine.

According to your instruction book, the space at the top could be used for a small TV, which Ronald must not have ordered.

It's okay, Ronald. I don't mind. The rest of the console brings me such joy. Shall we listen to America next? Sister Golden Hair Surprise?

One more pleasant part of our happy home is Carol, so pretty in pink.

Infinities of love to you, Eight-Track Player and Console. I promise we'll never be parted again.

Janie Junebug

America, will you please sing us out? I've seen you in concert five times, so I think you owe me.

  1. I never owned an 8-track tape. But, if I did, I would be elated with your find. And a turntable! How cool. I hope you and Carol have a great time listening to all your music.

    1. Carol doesn't care for the music I like. She listens to jazz or gospel for the most part. I'm fine with that.

  5. What a great FIND! You are a lucky woman. I've never owned those kind of tapes, only vinyl records and the smaller tapes that came later. Now you can play yours and that's so great.

  6. So pleased you can play your tapes again. We just bought a VHS tape recorder, it was quite expensive but I'm not ready to throw all the kids videos away, especially as I'm sure my Granddaughter will love watching them.

    1. I've kept all the VHS, too, because most of them are Disney movies.

  8. What I remember most about 8 tracks is that occasionally a song would click to a new track mid song. TheHub is still rueing the fact that I gave his player to Goodwill in the early 80's.

That's so awesome that Favourite Young Man found an 8-track player and a turn table! Woohoo! I am beginning to love Favourite Young Man too. :)

  12. That is so awesome, Janie - I'm excited for you. I well remember 8-tracks but they were mostly my brother's. I had cassette tapes and vinyl. How wonderful that you can play all your old favourites again. What a find! Favourite Young Man did good :)

    1. I am a lucky ducky. Everything in the console works perfectly and the console itself doesn't have a single scratch.

  15. My daughter got this nail stamp that you have to stick a pencil in and roll the tape. It brought back similar memories to this!

  16. that's so awesome! My 8-track tapes were either sold at garage sales or dumped decades ago.

  17. Sister Golden Hair was one of my all time favorites! So glad you found an eight track and a turntable, which by the way are making a comeback.
Also glad you have Carol in your life. She sounds like a treasurer.

I never had an 8 track player, but I had a boyfriend who did. Wishing you many happy hours of enjoying your music.

  19. Nice. I have a vintage record player that doesn't work. Still, it's kinda priceless to me.

I will, I will meet you cute America guys. In the middle, end, beginning. I'm yours.

    1. Lucky thanks to FYM. I want to find something special to put in the empty space where the TV was supposed to be and put the tapes in down next to the turntable.

  22. I've never heard an eight track player before so that's a great find. :) See, sometimes hanging onto stuff plays well in the end. There are so many times that I throw stuff away b/c we don't have room and end up regretting it years later.

    1. I gave away or sold at garage sales a lot of the kids' books and toys. It was a mistake. Some of those toys are quite valuable now, but where was I going to store everything?

  23. What a fabulous find, Janie. Enjoy! I have my original 1973 stereo turntable with radio and 8-track, but alas, the latter doesn't work, so I chucked the 8-track tapes. There's another turntable with cassette player that I use, though. Hurray for our "Old School" ways!
