Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,
It's time for the January 15, 2016, Battle of the Bands.
Mr. Stephen T. McCarthy provides us with this information about the bloghop:
The whole thing is really quite simple: You select two different versions of the same song (versions you feel might give each other some competition in the voting) and you post them on the 1st and the 15th of each month. On the 7th and 21st of each month, you add your own personal vote to the mix, total up all the votes and announce the winner on your blog.
Beyond that, just try to have fun with it and let your readers/voters have fun with it.
All righty, then. Let's have even more fun than usual! Our song is Old Man by Neil Young.
The question becomes, who makes a better Neil Young singing Old Man? Neil Young as Neil Young or Jimmy Fallon as Neil Young?
This BOTB is just for fun, and something I can't resist. I hope you enjoy the video. I don't know about you, but I can use a laugh after losing David Bowie and Professor Snape during the same week.
Please vote for Neil Young or Neil Young/Jimmy Fallon in your comment. I'll announce the winner on January 21st.
Visit Stephen T. McCarthy to get the complete list of participants in the Battle of the Bands.
Infinities of love,
Janie Junebug
Well Neil Young/Jimmy Fallon of course.
ReplyDeleteOkay.
DeleteI'll have to go with the original Neil Young because he's a genius, and because I detest Fallon and his mind-numbing gimmicks.
ReplyDeleteOh, don't be so snippy. It's funny.
DeleteThe Neil Young with Jimmy Fallon was more entertaining, so I'll vote that way.
ReplyDeleteAnd I shall accept your vote.
DeleteThis was very interesting. Nice to see old Neil without his panties in a political wad and having some fun. He's one of my favorite singer/songwriters, but he does get off on a tangent sometimes.
ReplyDeleteThis one had me fooled at first as Fallon's performance was so on spot. He looked like Neil Young (in his younger days) and his vocal was very much like Neil's, though I kept thinking that Neil's voice had improved. Fallon actually did a better singing Neil than Neil does and his guitar accompaniment was nice.
Maybe it's time for Young to retire and franchise his concert performance rights to Fallon.

Tossing It Out
I've always had a fondness for the differentness of Neil Young's voice.
DeleteI actually preferred Neil Young/Jimmy Fallon!!
ReplyDeleteJimmy Fallon is a good performer.
DeleteHave to go with the original, Neil Young.
ReplyDeleteJimmy Fallon is good and convincing. And fun.
But an original is an original.
I'm an original
DeleteThis is certainly an interesting battle. My vote is for Neil Young and Neil Young.
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh a bit, because just the other night the bf and I were watching Fallon, and Fallon was doing Bob Dylan singing a Drake song. He's certainly talented, but just once I think he should do a song as himself, not trying to imitate the other artists - that would be something to see!
I wonder if he ever sings as himself. He's a good guitarist. He has a good voice. I'd like to see Jimmy as Jimmy.
DeleteMe too! He is good.
DeleteJanie, what a fun video! Jimmy Fallon did a fine job. He's a talented young feller and if he were going against anyone other than the "real" Neil Young then he might swing my vote. That being said, I'm giving it to the Old Man, Young, singing "Old Man". Good battle! This is just what we all needed in the wake of Bowie's passing. :D
ReplyDeleteYour comment is so sweet.
DeleteLove it, Janie. ☺ First time I saw that was live on the show and it blew me away!
ReplyDeleteYes, it been a hard week, losing David Bowie and Alan Rickman, plus a few more, all from Cancer. Scary!
Back to the video, as much as I liked Jimmy Fallon - he's a great mimic - I have to vote for Neil. He's the true Old Man and I'm a huge fan.
He is the true Old Man, though he wrote the song when he was young.
DeleteTrue. :)
Delete>>... he wrote the song when he was young.
DeleteHe's STILL Young. He'll be Young forever. 'Forever Young'! I mean, unless he changes his name to Oldman - Neil Oldman.

☺
DeleteOh Janie, can you make this any harder? Geez, Louise. Jimmie Fallon Kicked butt, right?! > my vote goes to him.
ReplyDeleteThis will interesting to watch...
It is interesting indeed.
DeleteJimmy Fallon is absolutely hilarious! I love him. He's quite talented in so many ways. That being said, I have to vote for Neil Young.
ReplyDeleteFun battle Janie!!

Thanks for voting. I hope you're enjoying your family time.
DeleteOh now this was fun to watch. I am giving it to Jimmy Fallon for having the silver bells to play this straight with Neil Young. He can sing well and play guitar also. I am impressed.
ReplyDeleteI love the way Jimmy glances over at Neil Young when he starts playing.
DeleteOh, honey, it's gotta be Young/Fallon! The first time I saw that (when it aired), I was amazed. Definitely my favorite version.
ReplyDeleteVery creative, great BOTB!
Oh My goodness ! I love this post.
ReplyDeleteYou have two Neil Youngs singing one of my favorite songs.
Jimmy Neil Young is wonderful what talent But just the first notes of real Neil Young just sent a note of happiness to my heart. It was so nice to hear him again.
So my vote for the real Neil Young.
I can't believe Alan Rickman died my heart is broken.
cheers, parsnip
I think Alan Rickman was the same age as David Bowie.
DeleteThey are younger than me !
DeleteVery interesting. I'll go with the original.
ReplyDeleteYour vote is counted.
DeleteVery interesting. I'll go with the original.
ReplyDeleteYou missed me and came back to see me again, didn't you?
DeleteHiYa, JANIE! ~
ReplyDeleteThe ironically funny thing is that I came here to ask if you were finished participating in BOTB and should I remove BOTB-related links to your blog from my blog?
And then I found... THIS!
I guess you posted on top of it so quickly that I never saw the BOTB blog bit in my sidebar. Had no idea it existed. (Did you post one on January 1st that I also missed for the same reason?)
Well, it's clear you're still a BOTBer, so the links will remain in place.
This was a very clever Battle!
In truth, my favorite "Neil Young" is America doing the song 'A HORSE WITH NO NAME'. Go listen to that at YouTube and tell me that doesn't sound exactly like Neil Young!
I guess after America scored their first big hit impersonating a Canadian, they decided to find their own sound and stopped being Neil Young better'n Neil Young was Neil Young.
Between Neil Young and Neil Young/Jimmy Fallon, I guess I have to vote for Neil Young. I mean, really, in my opinion, only America could beat Neil Young in the "Neil Young" category. But Jimmy does Neil really well.
I gotta vote for the original over the cover version, but this was a fun and clever Battle, Janie.

'Loyal American Underground'
I didn't do a January battle, but I'm not done. I love America. I've seen them five times. You may call me Sister Golden Hair Surprise.
DeleteI meant a Jan. 1 battle.
DeleteOh, my. Fallon is uber-talented, and is absolute perfection when doing these impersonations. But Neil Young is legendary, and my vote goes to him. Fallon, to me, is legendary in his own right, but no dice on this one.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I went and got my own domain, so I am blogging at reinvintagedgoods.net from here on out. I hate asking people to update their links again so soon, but I found a price on web hosting that I couldn't refuse.
I am so fond of Neil Young, and I think Jimmy Fallon is unusually good with his impersonations. He captures people so that it's almost not a joke. Well, except when he does Jim Morrison singing the Reading Rainbow theme song.
DeleteWow, double vision!! Ya know, I'm gonna go with Jimmy for Neil, just cuz it was such a hoot watching them both. And, the younger generation rules the world, and this double doesn't have those pesky sideburns :)
ReplyDeleteI have pesky sideburns. I brush them back all the time.
DeleteI have to give this one to Jimmy Fallon. He does a better Neil Young than Neil Young.
ReplyDeleteHe's darn good.
DeleteFallon has talent and is very creative. This votes for Neil.
ReplyDeleteThis was a lot of fun. You know I can't vote against Neil Young, though, right? Well, now that we've settled that...
ReplyDeleteBut, so much fun!!!
I didn't get this one, either. I think goggle is playing mind games with me. Anyways, I will have to vote for the original guy, but Fallon did a great impersonation. I hope I made it under the wire for the vote. :)
ReplyDeleteYou know, Jimmy actually did pretty good I think!
ReplyDeleteFun battle. I have to go with Jimmy Fallon because he was pretty great as Neil.
ReplyDeletePlain old Neil.
