SUMMERTIME
The summer solstice occurs at 6:51 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, June 21st).
Not to sound completely uneducated but...what are the summer and winter solstices? I could google it but you're comments are much more interesting than quoted scientific facts with words made of thirty letters each.
Oh, my. You should probably limit your questions here to grammar and my life. If you ask about my life, then you'll probably get something interesting because I've reinvented myself so many time. My understanding of the summer and winter solstice is that they mark the minute that summer and winter begin based on how the Earth is tilted toward the sun. I'm afraid that's the best I can do.
This clip triggers memories of San Francisco in the mid and late 60s, the Filmore West, Avalon Ballroom, The Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, Hendrix, Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company. I often wonder if young people today, many of them raised on a steady diet of homogenized, droning hip-hop, dance, trance and club rhythms, ever heard anything like this or could appreciate its greatness. Janis covered the work of many other artists, ran the songs through her unique set of filters and made them her own.
I wish you and your boys a safe and happy summer, Janie Junebug!
Thank you. Safety first for us. We stay out of the heat. I don't allow the boys to be outside for more than a few minutes. I once saw a dog with heat stroke. It was horrible. But now for a more pleasant topic: Favorite Young Man has a huge appreciation for music from many eras, and he knows Janis Joplin when he hears her. He loves Pearl and I'm sure he covets my album. I used to date someone who saw The Doors at The Whiskey-A-Go-Go. Is that cool, or what?
I know. I can't sing like that. She had something very special. People always tell me I have "a sweet soprano voice." I wanna sound like a bluesy rocker.
Summertime! I was going to hang out with the Druids at Stonehenge. However, instead, I watched the double sunset at Leek, Staffordshire that occurs on the first day of summer.

DeleteA great song by almost anyone... but Janis' version is a classic among classics.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah.
DeleteTime flies. I was in two feet of snow just a blink ago. Well, I guess that was April.
ReplyDeleteApril wasn't that long ago. In Western Maryland sometimes we still had ice on our driveway at the beginning of June.
DeleteWhat a great great song :) a true classic!
ReplyDeleteI love Janis. I listen to Pearl regularly. I bought the album shortly after it came out when I was in the sixth grade.
DeleteHmmm. Not exactly Anne Brown or Mahalia Jackson. But pretty good.
ReplyDeleteHappy summertime, Janie.
Blessings and Bear hugs!
Happy Summer to you, Bear!
DeleteTake me with you!
ReplyDeleteNow that's singing summer in with STYLE. I loved Janis. Nobody else has ever had a voice quite like hers.
ReplyDeleteHappy summer, and happy weekend! (Keep cool.)
She was one of a kind. God made her and broke the mold.
DeleteI don't want to be up at that hour on a Saturday, but i probably will be.
ReplyDeleteWhy? You have my permission to stay in bed. I'll be there, too -- in my bed, that is.
DeleteFigures. I was sleeping--LOL! :)
ReplyDeleteJanis was an experience to behold. Raw emotion. Guttural. Undecorated.
I know. I can't sing like that. She had something very special. People always tell me I have "a sweet soprano voice." I wanna sound like a bluesy rocker.
DeleteI've never heard her sing this. Wow.
ReplyDeleteAwesome in the true meaning of the word, isn't it?
DeleteOH MY! Now does that bring back memories or what, Janie!! I LOVED Janis back then!
ReplyDeleteNobody like her....ever!
Oh how I liked that song
ReplyDeleteMe, too, Jo-Anne.
DeleteI feel like we've been in summer for about a month already. :)
ReplyDeleteSame here.
DeleteSummertime! I was going to hang out with the Druids at Stonehenge. However, instead, I watched the double sunset at Leek, Staffordshire that occurs on the first day of summer.
ReplyDeleteHappy summer, Janie.
Gary :)
A double sunset sounds so cool.
DeleteDefinitely the best of Janice on your blog, Janie! This is my favorite Joplin song, bar none.
