Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,
I wonder how many people have lost their jobs because they commented on Charlie Kirk's death. The most prominent occurred earlier this week when the FCC threatened ABC's (Disney) license––as in if you don't have a license you are not on the air at all––over the mild observation Jimmy Kimmel made about Kirk.
When the Colbert cancellation was announced, 🟧 said Kimmel and Fallon would be next.
One down; one to go.
Supposedly, Kimmel is suspended and could return to his show. But under what conditions?
Affiliate giant Sinclair demands Kimmel make a public apology to the Kirk family and use personal funds to make a donation to the Kirk family and to Kirk's organization, Turning Point USA.
I hope he doesn't do it. Jimmy Kimmel doesn't owe anyone an apology.
Plenty of ordinary folks who don't have money to fall back on have been losing their jobs, too, and not necessarily because their employers are monitoring their social media. Instead, the Web site "Charlie Kirk's Murderers" was set up so friends, neighbors, and strangers could report people for their "inappropriate" comments on Kirk. The site was rebranded as "Charlie Kirk Data Foundation" before finally seeming to disappear after claiming to receive 50,000 submissions that were reported to employers, if possible.
Although a lot of people are relating what's happened to cancel culture, that is not what it is. It's a freedom of speech issue. Members of the right can and do say whatever they want. I won't even bother to quote Kirk. I suspect we're all sick of reading about the crap he said.Of course, those of us on the left already know we're not allowed to share facts and opinions unless they're in line with 🔶.
He who must not be named filed a $15 billion lawsuit against the New York Times a couple of days ago because they hurt his feelings during the election. A judge dismissed the suit Friday because it doesn't have a "short and plain statement of the claim." The felon has 28 days to refile. IF he refiles and the Times settles with him, I will be so disappointed.
Infinities of love,
Janie Junebug
Click on the link and it will send you to a YouTube video from Stephen Colbert's show.
He's been in England this week, and because of protestors his trip in a royal carriage was just around the grounds of Windsor Castle, just so he could say he'd had a ride! A complete mockery of a president. And don't get me started on Kirk, and the Christian leaders singing his praises.
ReplyDeleteNothing is Christian about Kirk or the orange felon. The felon has been asked what his favorite Bible verse is. His answer is that it's not fair to name one verse over another. Puh-lease. He's never read anything in a Bible. I feel terrible when he inflicts himself on other countries.
DeleteDeep breath, deep breath.
ReplyDeleteYes. I need that, too.
DeleteJanie, thank you for this post as it made me smile, and I need to smile at something these days. The smiling game from the orange symbols for the felon and that last video. It is priceless. I never thought in a million years that our country would be in the spot that it is in now. And you are correct, we won't stop fighting!
ReplyDeleteI never thought the US could be this way either, Michael. It's horrifying and all I can do is search for bright spots. I love the video from the Colbert show!
DeleteI totally believe that if I said half the things Kirk said at my job I'd get canned; if I said half the things he said on the street to strangers I'd likely get assaulted.
ReplyDeleteBUT he has/had the right to say them and the fact that the Rightwingnuts can't see their own hypocrisy, even in their adulation of this racist bigoted homophobe, is stunning.
xoxo
I disagree with you on one point: I think most of them know they're hypocrites and simply don't care.
DeleteSpeaking as a foreign observer, I am absolutely shocked by these latest developements! 😲 Loved < a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gma4TPZCXg">Jimmy Fallon's response.
ReplyDeleteAs always, Debbie, I appreciate your support. I'm having a problem with the YouTube address. It's taking me to a video with a very pregnant woman who says she has one month to go!
DeleteI think the Times has less incentive to settle than the TV networks, given that newspapers aren't subject to any federal licensing. I also hope they hold out, especially given how egregiously ridiculous that lawsuit is.
ReplyDeleteQuite of few of the felon's lawsuits are thrown out as frivolous. We'll see if he refiles.
Delete"Affiliate giant Sinclair demands Kimmel make a public apology to the Kirk family and use personal funds to make a donation to the Kirk family and to Kirk's organization" If I'm Kimmel, I say thanks but no thanks and move on to other projects. If he comes back, he will be monitored and told what to say.
ReplyDeleteOf course, if the Mistress was told "Affiliate giant Sinclair demands Mistress Borghese make a public apology to the Kirk family and use personal funds to make a donation to the Kirk family and to Kirk's organization" the I'd tell them and the family to go fuck themselves.
Yes, I'd tell them something similar.
DeleteHe has already mentioned Seth Meyers, too. And all the democrats and all the media, too, of course.
ReplyDeleteStephen Miller has been saying the US should have 100 million people. We have 340 million people right now. Digest that one for a while. Getting cancelled may be the least of the problems. Dark times. Dark times.
Yes, now he's talking about Seth Meyers and The View. I wonder what he'll go after following those. I saw a news article that said the Disney+ cancellation site crashed from so many people canceling their subscriptions over Jimmy Kimmel.
DeleteThis is Birgit. It’s disgusting what is happening and how many kiss Trump’s ass. I was sickened when all the big wigs like Bezos and Bill Gates sat at the table and said sweet nothing to that pompous ass. Kimmel is not surprised but must be disheartened and pissed especially for all the staff that work with him. My hubby has been saying that if all the people would not go to work until Rump is gone, one would see that administration fall. I doubt that will happen, but wouldn’t it be nice.
ReplyDeleteAs a nation and also as a species we haven't figured out what we tolerate and what or if we ban. This is an old struggle and ongoing
ReplyDeleteThanks for this. I'm glad Kimmel is back even though I never stay up that late. I did my part by contacting ABC, Sinclair and Nextstar. These people need to know there are more of us than there are of them.
