SOME OF MY FRIENDS AT WORK

 Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

Rain dumped from the sky this week, filling Lake Junebug. If it were a little warmer, Sweet Cheeks and I could go skinny dipping.

Although I tired of the rain, some of my friends at work were pleased with it and were out in full force.

When it's not raining, I take a walk around our building each morning and afternoon. The geese don't welcome me, but some ducks and I have become pals.

I hope you can see the little bit of duck under the bushes. It's a mama on her nest.

I visited her almost every day for weeks. On my last day of training at work, she rose a little on her nest, and I knew babies were hatching.

Two days later, there she was in the parking lot with her offspring following. They were adorably fluffy and cheepy.

This protector made sure I kept my distance.

A few days later, another mama on the nest showed up in a less protected area. Her babies didn't make up.

One morning I greeted her.

That afternoon, she was gone.

I continue to keep an eye on my friends.

I could tell you that I've returned to blogging regularly, but I know better. I'm tired at the end of the work day, when household tasks and dogs await me. I'm happy to report that I still like my job. I'm treated well. I'll stop by to see you as often as I can.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Glad to hear your job is going well and that you like it! Yeah, stay clear of those Canada geese. They're miserable bastards, Canada geese.

    1. I didn't see any other ducks hanging out with the second mama, so she was unprotected and alone.

  5. I had ten days off with the Rona and still didn't find time to blog. :( Sometimes you need to take care of the real life before the blog o sphere. That's a bummer about the ducks that didn't make it. We were just looking at a tree outside that we will likely have to trim WAY back for the shed building. Hubs noticed a nest in it. Thankfully it's vacant. We have 5 hawks around the house to keep tabs on. Last year it was two. They are amazing to watch, and less nerve wracking because the dog weighs 80 lbs and isn't a treat for them. Course, it doesn't stop them from circling.

    1. A neighbor expressed concern a while back about the safety of her tiny dogs with large hawks circling in the sky.

  6. Nice the ducks and duckies have a drainage ditch for swimming and don't need to cross a road.

    1. They have quite a bit of water, yet sometimes I see them in the street and want to stop to scold them.

  10. Precious little ducklings. So happy to hear things are going well at the job. I don't blog as much for the same reasons! Counting down to retirement at the end of May. I can't wait!!

    1. One day a man from another place of business heard me talking to the ducks and commented on his enjoyment of nesting mamas, so I'm not alone in my duck love.

    1. Both of the mamas I observed sat on a lot of eggs but also laid some eggs outside of the nest. Maybe they couldn't hold in the eggs long enough to reach the nest???

  19. Some time I would love to hear how you landed in Hagerstown for 12 years. As for the ducks, there's nothing more adorable than a duckling, not even a kitten. And for sheer protection, a farm duck or goose is better than a dog.
