THE ACADEMY AWARDS ARE ALMOST HERE: HILLBILLY ELEGY

 Nomadland = beautiful

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom = lush

The United States vs. Billie Holiday dull

The Trial Of The Chicago 7 = exciting

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

Yes, Academy Awards are presented on Sunday, so I have to quickly wrap up my posts about nominated movies I've seen.

You can see an earlier post I wrote about Hillbilly Elegy HERE (R; 2020; I watched it on Netflix). My word for this movie is sad because the characters have such difficult lives.

When Hillbilly Elegy came out, many expected Glenn Close and Amy Adams would be acting nominees. Glenn Close is indeed nominated for Best Supporting Actress.  Hillbilly Elegy is also nominated for Makeup and Hairstyling (Eryn Krueger Mekash, Matthew W. Mungle, Patricia Dehaney). I certainly understand the second nomination. It must have taken a lot of work to make Glenn Close and Amy Adams look unattractive.

This is not a movie I want to watch multiple times, or even a second time, because it's so sad.

It's Close's fourth nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and she's been nominated four times for Best Actress. We'll hear a lot of speculation about whether this is her time to take home a little, gold man. And we'll find out on Sunday.

I've looked at ways to live stream the awards (I canceled DirecTV because I got sick of paying for it), so if you watch on Sunday, I'll probably be watching with you.

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. I have not seen any Oscar movies this year or for many years. I would like to see Momadland and that is about it.
I do not watch any award show any more. They seem to be for the liberal talking heads talking to a room full of like people, to ply their pet projects to tell us what to believe.
I think there are several places you can watch the show. I hope you will enjoy it.
Huggles to the GUD DUGS ! and you also.

    1. Thank you, parsnip. I hope it's a good show. Some years are better than others.

  2. I'm surprised too that Amy Adams didn't get an Oscar nod for this. Glenn Close was amazing as always.

    1. Amy Adams has been nominated for best supporting actress five times and for best actress once. I think she's great.

  3. I read the book - it reminded me of my dad's family in Eastern Tennessee.

  4. I'm not much for movies and I don't get into the hoopla of awards shows. I will say that we cut the cable last year. I installed and antenna on the house and we get really fantastic reception. Hubs of course needed his sports shows and political networks though so we opted for FUBO through our streaming service. It's $60 a month and we get almost every channel and more that we did with cable.

    1. The only awards show I watch nearly every year is the academy awards. I love good movies.

  6. I have heard good and bad things about this film but this doesn’t mean I won’t see it when I can. I don’t have Netflix so I have to wait until I can see it. Glenn Close is like Barbara Stanwyck..great actress who never won an Oscar. I think France’s McDormand will win but you just never know. It could also be Viola Davis. This year is a tough one.

  7. I enjoyed this movie, but as I recall it was rather controversial. Some people thought it relied a little too much on stereotypes.

    1. I wrote in my original review that I wasn't sure if it reflected reality or magnified stereotypes. I'm still troubled by it.
