I'M STILL HERE

Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,

I haven't gotten lost.

I haven't run away, although I was tempted to do so yesterday when Favorite Young Man barfed.

I'm busy with my job search, learning new skills, and comforting Franklin and Penelope. They hate the fireworks. I hate them, too. If we only heard the explosions on July 4th, I wouldn't mind too much. The problem is that some of my neighbors start shooting off their mouths their firecrackers, Roman candles, and whatever else they have (including guns) the weekend before the 4th. The shooting off will continue until at least Saturday night so we experience the unhappiness of an entire week of blasting.

It's a good thing that Favorite Young Man has helped get the dogs out to potty before bed because they don't want to leave the house.

What Penelope's little face looks like during the fireworks:

See the big scaredy eyes?

Infinities of love,

Janie Junebug

  1. Hey Janie,

As Penny has told me, humans should go to controlled fireworks displays. Safer and cheaper.

Penny sends comforting, empathetic wishes to Franklin and Penelope.

All the best with your ongoing endeavours, Janie.

    Penny's fictional human,

    Gary

    1. Thank you, Penny, for sending Gary to offer comfort. We don't mind that he's fictional.

  2. Penelope isn't alone. I'm not a fan of fireworks either.

    1. They're great at DisneyWorld. Not great in my neighborhood.

  3. Poor Penelope. She does look frightened! Look at those bug eyes.

    1. When she's scared, her eyes look as if they'll pop out of her head.

    1. Oh, and I love the word barf. In fact, most words for the act of vomiting are quite satisfying. The act itself isn't much fun, of course.

  5. Oh poor little Penelope your sweet little face looks so scared. Franklin will help keep you safe. Plus you have a nice tall person who loves you to cuddle with.
I cringe when 4th come around.
We grew up with big fireworks shows held in the football stadium where they should be not in a dry desert town but cheap fireworks from Mexico makes it so much fun .... for the stupid. That is not even the bad part the guns are the worst. Christmas and New Years are also big for shooting off guns in Tucson. Thank Goodness this has gotten somewhat better over the years.
I now live near The Ventana Resort and they shoot off fireworks when Pima County allows, (wildfire danger)I just sit outside and enjoy.
The Square Dogs usually only bark once then go back to sleep.

    cheers, parsnip and thehamish

  6. Oh, poor pooches. What their humans think makes for festive fun is just phooey for them.

    1. I don't think it's festive fun at all, but some of the neighbors do.

  7. Oh no! A week of fireworks and bangs and clashes is way too much. It must feel like living in a war zone.
Son3 lives in a predominantly Dominican neighborhood in Manhattan. He sent us videos of some of the fireworks and firecrackers going off outside his apartment. How you are able to fire such large fireworks in the dense apartment neighborhood is beyond me, plus the population is so dense the firings were continual.

    1. It's not unusual for someone to get killed, especially in the densely populated areas.

  8. It's supposed to be illegal to shoot off fireworks inside the city limits here but people don't care and, it appears, neither do the police. I guess it was crazy over in the McFamily neighborhood. Wasn't bad here, thank goodness. Most dogs just hate them--some are really terrified. I'm glad it is over with--or should be by now. I hope FYM isn't too sick.

    1. It's illegal here, but I guess the police have given up. FYM recovered pretty quickly and started eating everything in sight.

  9. I hear ya. The 4th of July and New Years suck for dogs...and for the people who love them. I had all the Grey Zone dogs out for a potty at 5:30 in the morning on Wednesday July 5th and some numb-nuts decides to blow off a bunch of firecrackers at that same time. 5:30 in the morning! No respect for the neighbors. Poor dogs were mid-stream when they starting blasting and they just up and bolted back into the house...

Glad you and Franklin and Penelope survived the celebrations. How's Fav Young Man? And how's the situation with the kids behind the fence? Anymore problems??

    1. 5:30 a.m. is ridiculous. That's insane. I had the dogs out yesterday after they ate supper and someone shot off firecrackers. Penelope and Franklin ran in without leaving a drop of pee outside. Favorite Young Man is fine. He bounces back quickly. I haven't seen the kids behind the fence at all. Maybe they went to summer camp or to visit a relative.

  11. Glad you're still here, Junie. Good luck with your job search and skills development.

My dog doesn't like fireworks or thunder either, and it's pretty much the same thing with the Canada Day celebrations - fireworks all weekend long...

  13. We live out in a rural area, so I suppose I don't think much of fireworks being set off by the neighbors. It's just what happens. I would imagine it's bad in the city, though, from what I hear as I read posts from my friends. Our animals don't seem to be bothered by them.

    1. Franklin and Penelope are very sensitive to loud noises. Thunderstorms are unbearable for them.

  14. It's illegal for private citizens to have fireworks in this state, but they're easy enough to buy in nearby Connecticut. And this time of year, I think the police tend to look the other way.

  15. That sounds like a lousy way to spend July 4 and indeed the whole week. One of our cats is very skittish and hides in the basement behind a couch, as far away as he can burrow, when there is even a knock at the door or if the doorbell rings. Thank goodness the fireworks here are much less loud than yours. We would need a cat therapist. Hugs to all of you; sounds like you need a few :)

  17. Oh no! We have jerks that set off fireworks anytime of the year just because and I know how frightened my babies get. Definitely not fun. Hope you are doing great, Janie.

  18. Oh My Goodness, I just want to hug your furbaby with those big soulful eyes. At least we don't have idiots shooting guns off...that is just pathetic. I just hate the fireworks and my doggie also gets so scared

  19. Good to hear you are still around, when there was thunder or fireworks my dog DC would want to hide, our dog Dot Dot wasn't bothered by either so dogs like people are different

  20. So maybe I'm just crazy, but we listen to fireworks every night. I guess we're just used to it. And we don't have pets. (We have kids instead. ;)

I'm hoping for you--on the job front.

  21. Our fireworks were 15 miles away and could not be seen over the hills, but the booms made both dogs wake up and bark and bark at the noise. Penelope does look so scared, hope they are both fine now.

  22. I must have only dreamed that I left a comment here! I feel badly for Franklin and Penelope. One of our cats is very sensitive to noises as well. It's hard to see them scared, and they have no way to know it's harmless and will stop eventually. Hugs to all at your house.

  23. I'm sad in thinking about the fact that fireworks constitute animal abuse. They should be outlawed altogether, for Franklin and Penelope.

    Love ya.

  24. My first dog hated fireworks and would try to hide under a chair which he couldn't fit under. Poor doggies :(

  25. Awww, my heart breaks for those sweet little eyes. I hope the explosions have finally stopped by now. Ours finally stopped on Sunday night. Hasn't anyone told these kids about video games? You can blow things up, and it looks WAY cooler (plus no scared animals, bonus).

  26. Poor little Penelope! And Franklin too. Not to mention veterans with PTSD. I, myself, love fireworks with a passion! Sending you love and hugs, Janie!
