Gentle Readers . . . and Maxwell,
It's time for the October 1, 2016, Battle of the Bands.
Our host, Mr. Stephen T. McCarthy, provides us with this information about the bloghop:
The whole thing is really quite simple: You select two different versions of the same song (versions you feel might give each other some competition in the voting) and you post them on the 1st and the 15th of each month. On the 7th and 21st of each month, you add your own personal vote to the mix, total up all the votes and announce the winner on your blog.
Beyond that, just try to have fun with it and let your readers/voters have fun with it.
All righty, then. Let's have fun!
Let's Get It On was a big hit for the late great Marvin Gaye, released in 1973, and written by Gaye and Ed Townsend.
Today I have two covers of the song for you. The first is by Boyz II Men:
Boyz II Men released their version of the classic in 1995 on an album that was a tribute to Marvin Gaye, Inner City Blues: The Music of Marvin Gaye.
Our second cover caught me by surprise when I watched the John Cusack movie, High Fidelity. Here's Jack Black:
High Fidelity was released in 2000 and co-starred Black. I thought he was hilarious, and then I was stunned when he sang. I've been a Jack Black fan ever since.
Now it's your turn. Do you prefer Boyz II Men or Jack Black?
Please vote in your comment and, if you can, tell us the reason for your choice. I'll return on October 7 to add up the votes and tell you who the winner is.
I hope you'll visit the other participants in the Battle of the Bands bloghop. You can find the up-to-date list of Band Aids and sign up to join us at the blog of our fearless leader, Stephen T. McCarthy.
Happy Listening!
Infinities of love,
Janie Junebug
I'm a Jack Black fan. He sings in a number of movies and never fails to entertain. He's excellent doing this song, but the Boyz are so smooth with their version that it's hard not to vote for them.
ReplyDeleteA vote for Boyz II Men.

Boyz II Men it is!
DeleteI listened to Boyz II Men and thought, oooh, what a great makeout song. But then it just went too long (probably because I wasn't making out at the time) and I got tired of it. But Jack Black! A vibrant, soulful, singing just to me, makeout song! Jack gets my vote. He does the wondrous Marvin proud.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm too old to make out for the length of that song. But when I was seventeen . . .
DeleteI loved High Fidelity. I had recently seen Jack Black in Jesus' Son, and his performances in both roles made me a fan to this day.
ReplyDeleteI'm voting for his version.
I don't think I've seen Jesus' Son. I have to look for that. He's been in a few very bad movies, but most of the time I think he's great.
DeleteI can't believe I'm saying this, but I vote Jack Black. Boyz II Men was always way too cheesy for me... and even if Jack's is cheesy, he knows it, and he plays to it, which is fun.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shock! A Beer Boy and Jack Black!
DeleteI love Jack Black movies and any movie that would have both Joan and John Cusack is totally worth watching. BUT, even though Jack does a fabulous job with that song he still going after the laughs which detracts from really how good he sings.
ReplyDeleteThe Boyz II Men is the better in my opinion.
All right! It's Boyz II Men for you.
DeleteSorry, but I don't have an opinion on this one.
ReplyDeleteIt's a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll.
Delete(Link>) It's A Long Way Down To The Top! by a band you potatoably never heard of before.

I kinda liked that music. I can picture myself putting on that album and lighting up . . . something to enjoy while I listen. Not that I would do that at my advanced age.
DeleteWell, Boyz II Men almost put me to sleep, to be honest. Probably a great make out song being so slow and repetitious, but for getting some blood riled up and passion kick started--Jack Black quite surprised me. I guess I will have to watch a few of his movies--LOL! Jack has my vote. :)
ReplyDeleteHave you ever seen School of Rock? I think you'd love it.
Deletei am sitting this one out. i like the Boys to Men vocals better but hate the instrumentals. Jack Black's version is a nicer arrangement, and he has a nice voice, just not really what the song needs.
ReplyDeleteYou have the right to abstain, Anne. Thanks for visiting anyway.
DeleteI love John Cusack, so a movie with him in it is already a plus and Jack Black had a chance there...but I'm going to have to vote for Boyz II Men.
ReplyDeleteBoyz II Men it is, madam.
DeleteSorry. But I have to go with Jack Black. He's much more my style. XP
ReplyDeleteNo need to apologize. I wouldn't choose them as a contender if I didn't want people to vote for them.
DeleteI did enjoy Jack Black's version, but overall, Boyz II Men does the trick for me! Great battle, Janie!

Thank you. I'm glad you like it.
DeleteJack Black gets my vote, a movie clip beats an official video. Well Jack brought some excitement to it.
ReplyDeleteJack Black was probably born entertaining his parents.
DeleteI'm going with Mr. Black!!!!! I love these by the way! Think I have said that before!!!
ReplyDeleteYou have said it before, but you can say it every time if you like. It makes me happy that you enjoy it.
DeleteFearless Leader here with the definitive comment, as is always 'spected of me:
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, Marvin Gaye was so great that it's such a shame that cat was so messed up! (And 'What's Going On' -- front and back -- is one of the coolest album covers ever.)
About 30 seconds into it, I was sure I'd be voting for Boyz II Men. That had the 1974 vibe of music I listened to back then when I was Black and cool. But, consarn it! The song just kept going on and on like the Energizer Bunny meandering through a 100-acre carrot patch.
Seriously, in the time it took Boyz II Men to finish that song I could have "gotten it on" 4 times and had 3 cigarettes before passing out.
I vote for JACK BLACK AND THE JOANHEARTS.

Your comment made me laugh so hard that I wish I had a Cool Commenter award to give to you. I even read it out loud to my son, who listened without screaming and running away. He's pretty tolerant of me most of the time. Or maybe sometimes. Or now and then. Now behave yourself, you Trumpaholic.
DeleteI've heard Jack Black sing in a few movies, yet every time I am surprised and impressed that he really can sing! Jack has my vote. I think the Boys II Men version is boring.
ReplyDeleteJack Black saw your comment and likes it so much that he wants you to join him for the premiere for his next movie.
DeleteOh, it's Jack Black all the way for me. Boyz to Men had a nice take on the song and I enjoyed it but I really liked Jack Black's version so he gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteGreat battle Janie! Such a great song...
Michele at Angels Bark
Jack Black is The Man for you.
DeleteI expected to vote for da Boyz....always have a soft spot for Philly musicians, and know their version.
ReplyDeleteI expected Black's version to be a joke, and boy was I surprised. This was a tough choice.
And to my surprise I am voting for Jack Black!
Larry
I love Jack Black. He's in a band called Tenacious D.
DeleteI just like Jack Black singing. He was in a cover of "Happy" that was a hoot, with lots of other people and he was just so happy that who could resist.
ReplyDeleteHe just seems to have fun. I like that.
cheers, parsnip
I especially liked School of Rock and the way he interacted with the kids. They looked as if they were having fun working with him. He seems like a big kid.
DeleteJack Black can be funny and he certainly surprised me with his rendition of the song. But he can also be a bit much for me at times. I really liked what Boyz II Men did with the song. I shall be placing my vote with them.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the battle this time around.
Thanks! Another vote for Boyz II Men. I think it will be close.
DeleteJanie, Boyz II Men did a good job, but I really liked Jack Black, so he gets my vote! Cool, fun battle, my friend! :D
ReplyDeleteJack Black makes sweet mewsic for you, kitty Cathy.
DeleteBoys to Men made me want to watch paint dry...zzzzzzzz. Jack Black actually gets on my nerves but he is an excellent singer as long as I don't have to look at him.hahahaa so Jack Black gets my vote
ReplyDeleteI counted the votes, Birgit. You voted for the winner.
